    Tip,

Sure sounds like you are familiar with the tax laws when driving truck. I'll have to keep in touch with you when the time comes for me to file my taxes, but I'm going to have to wait until I reach the 50 posts requirement before I can PM you.

I am just about finished with the school. I take my pre-trip, skills, and road test tomorrow (Sunday). (The Swift school is a licensed third party tester). I should pass without a problem (but you never know). Monday morning I go to AZ MVD to pick up my actual CDL, then straight to orientation which is Tuesday also.

So far I have had three different instructors; classroom, range skills, and road. All of them have been TOP notch. Safety is the #1 thing stressed all the time.

Hopefully I'll get a mentor right away and be on the road by the end of next week.

Well, the best of luck on your test tomorrow. Are you doing your orientation there at the Phoenix terminal or are they sending you to the terminal you will be working out of for that? I am inquiring because I will be starting class on the 1st of August. If I may ask two more questions...what all did you take with you when you went to the school and where are you accessing the internet from?

I am doing my orientation at the Phoenix terminal. You have the choice to do it at another terminal, but you will soon find out that Swift has closed a lot of terminals in the last couple of years. Maybe closed isn't exactly the right word, most have been turned into drop yards. It's up to you if you do the orientation immediately after the school or if you take a week or two off.

I took everything I needed for the school and the 6 weeks with the mentor. Fortunately for me, my sister lives about a mile from the terminal, so I am staying with her instead of the motel.

I got an air card for my Internet. I already had a Verizon phone, so I just added the Internet service to that. I you read some of the threads on here you'll soon find an air card from a cell provider is the way to go for Internet service. I think the motel has free wireless though. Be prepared to share your room with 3 other students (4 to a room - bunk beds).

Unless you have the cash to eat out every meal, bring as much dry and canned food as you can. Getting to the store isn't real easy and walking in the heat can be VERY uncomfortable, especially after spending 10 hours on the range in the heat. They say to bring $150.00 - I would that is the BARE minimum and you would have to get to Wally World and buy dry/frozen stuff. There is a small fridge and microwave in the rooms.

I'm in class P291. You'll be in the classroom with Phil from Wednesday through Sunday, so maybe I'll see you there, although I don't know how I'll know you. I plan on stopping in the classroom sometime Wednesday to say hi to Phil - he is a great instructor. Pay attention and don't get caught up in hanging around the smoking area shooting the bull instead of studying and you'll do fine.

If you have any other questions, let me know. You might want to post in the Newbies forum though, as that is more appropriate than here for this kind of info. I'll look there tomorrow to see if you have. Got to hit the rack now, 4 a.m. is coming soon...

To be honest I am not 100% positive, but most trainee's I talk with are looking for their mentors while at their home. This does not mean that your mentor will be from your home terminal either. A majority of the time they will be, but if there is an available mentor in your area from another terminal, then that mentor will grab a student.

Some area's we watch our hiring at if it would be hard to get you home. Let me send an email to the recruiter for Ocala and find out for sure. Florida is a consumable state, they really dont produce much, which means its harder to get loads out of, especially if your located far southern florida. I will let you know what the recruiter says.
