End dump drives down freeway with bed up, guess what happened

Not good at all. Closed IH-45 for 12 hrs.

Not an unusual thing either, had the same thing happen on I-10 few years back except that driver wasn't wearing his seat belt. Truck stopped but he didn't.

Ironic....they make an alarm for this...issue. It's not expensive and easy to mount.

Most drivers not running straights should actually hear the PTO crying in pain as the engine revs up and down with shifts and / or there is usually a big red chicken light on the PTO control...and of course, there's no need to glance out the mirror......

I honestly don't see how this could happen..

I can see *maybe* if he just dumped in a work zone and wasn't paying attention over head but there is NO excuse for this....Lucky he didn't roll the #### thing over..


+1 on the idiot light my last job had them center dash on every truck so if the box was up you couldn't miss the light..

 

I agree with the above posters - HOW COULD THIS DRIVER NOT NOTICE! Besides the engaged PTO screaching while driving highway speeds and the dash light on; wouldn't you think driving with the trailer dump up, giving the truck a weird center of gravity, would cause the driver to notice? I've seen tarps hit overpasses, but never the actual dump body.

This guy/gal must have been twisted or something...

 

I ran dumps a few years ago and none of the PTO's would "scream" if you forgot to shut it off. A couple of the trucks even had constant drive pumps that couldn't be shut off. Most of the idiot lights didn't work either and the company had no interest in fixing them no matter how many transmissions they lost.

Update: the unit was operated by a driver whom claimed on the evening news that he " was unfamiliar " with the operation of this truck and "pushed the wrong button " as translated by the reporter from Spanish.

TXDOT estimates the trailer removal and sign truss damage to be in excess of 100k and " will be pursuing the trucks owner " for the costs involved. It will be interesting to see who pays the bill as the truck was likely under dispatch. Be some serious finger pointing going on here shortly.
