    WRONG!?!
I care, because your "sheep" mentality holds the entire industry back.....and that affects ME. Think about it.

Wrong white dog the only thing holding you back is yourself. Don't blame others who have different needs and opinions for your failure and inability to advance. Not everyone has the goals as You and some people actually are happy and comfortable being a "sHeep". Think about it.

I keep hearing drivers post about this 'sheep' mentality. I understand what you're saying, however I want to point out a different perspective.
We are in the midst of the worst economic downturn since 1935.
If you are over 45 years old and become unemployed, there is less than a 20%chance you will become employed again in your field. (I think I read where 81% over the age of 45 will not be employed in their field again within 24 months)
If you are 55, that drops to less than 10%.
So where do these guys find a job? Trucking will hire them.
They are desperate people, searching for a job, that are told by recruiters how great things are and will be.
They are trying to save a house, hold a family together and pay their bills.
They come into a rough industry, innocent as the day is long, and follow procedures, hoping for the best, but slowly finding out how hard this business is.
Calling them sheep is not fair.
It's a rude awakining to many as to how this industry works, and when they've been around the block a time or two, they will step up and express their thoughts.
In the meantime, it's lambs to the slaughter and business can get away with it because there are so many more waiting in line for a job...ANY job.
    Desperate times bring desperate people.
If you want someone to be angry at, don't blame new drivers. Blame politicians (from BOTH parties) for leading us into this mess, just to line their own pockets.

    <steps off soapbox>

    You're right.....my bad, and I apoligize.
    "Lambs" it is.

Anyone that will allow a company to FORCE them to log "on-duty", just because they are on company property....is a freaking sheep. Sorry.

Sounds to me like they are just trying to run your logbook out of hours so they don't have to do THEIR jobs by finding you a load and/or PAYING YOU.

Yes; I know......there are going to be those that come here now and say "why would they do that....then THEY would not make money if the truck ain't moving".
Well; give me a DECENT, VIABLE reason why they would force you to use up your 70 hours when even the LAW doesn't require it? Remember.... I want a DECENT, VIABLE answer....not some puke spuge that some of you sheep are so desperate to try and feed me.
    THINK ABOUT IT!!!

In answer to your question: 395.2~On Duty Time means all time from the time a driver begins to work or is required to be in readiness to work until the time the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work. On Duty Time shall include:
    (1) All time at a plant, terminal, facility, or other property of a motor carrier or shipper, or on any public property, waiting to be dispatched, unless the driver has been relieved from duty by the motor carrier;...

So if a driver is in the company terminal, attending class or training in order to be dispatched, he is required by DOT to log line 4.
This is not a carrier rule. This is DOT.
Just because you don't do it, doesn't make it legal.
Just because I don't like it, doesn't mean I can skip it.
Stevens requires drivers to log legally.
    Period.
So it's not a matter of sheep, lambs or lemmings. Stevens enforces the rules to the letter of the law.
I would guess this is a rule that would virtually never be caught on a persons individual log book audit, but that doesn't make it any more legal than failing to log a 15 minute bathroom break.
Done all the time, but still not legal.

    Dave_AL Thanks this.

Having spent the last 27 years as a federal safety inspector responsible for regulatory compliance and enforcement (actually, in a DOT agency, though not trucking) I can tell you that eventually, those "oops; I forgot to put it in the log" moments will catch up to you. And under CSA 2010, the points go both to the driver and the company. My guess is that's why many companies, including Stevens, have tightened up their driver training and operating standards and gone to e-logs and such.

There is no benefit in tempting someone to run illegally by giving them the opportunity to do so. The company surely does not want the DOT interventions that are sure to show up if enough bad things happen. Their paying clients will quickly run to other carriers and their planned delivery schedules will grind to a halt with more trucks getting side-of-the-road inspections and such.

Nope, noncompliance is no good for anybody. And the driver really does not win in the long run.

    Emulsified Thanks this.
