Purchase price negociation

    What I would like to know is where to start my price negotiating when I decide on a truck to buy. In used car pricing, I know that they are on average marked up 5-7k above wholesale/black book price. So knocking 3-4k off asking price is usually where I start. I appreciate any & all the help I can get.

    This can be a little tricky! I have no clue what the mark up is, but I know what I think a certain truck is worth and that is all that counts.

    Example.... I looked at an 05 w900L, 86" sleeper, C15 Cat and 18spd trans. The dealer wanted 55k for it. Said it was a "manager" special cause they dropped the price from 57k. truck was blue and I like blue!

    Another truck they had was an 05 same specs except it had the smaller 72" sleeper and a carrier APU on it. Now this truck had 200k more miles but the head was replace. They wanted 45k for this truck and it was a champagne color.

    Now the Blue truck underneath was just awful and everything looked old. The champagne truck looked like new, almost.

    See the different variables in the trucks?

    First off the Blue one wasn't worth 40k. You had to be there to understand. The champagne one was the better buy.

    The dealer wouldn't budge on the Blue truck so I left! A week later the Blue one was gone, some poor sucker is probably regretting that right now...LOL.

    There is no easy answer to your question.

    Sure there is Les2. There is a retail value for which the dealer tries to sell the truck to the public at. Then there is the black book value for which he will buy the truck from or sell it to an auction. No matter how the truck is equipped, there is a spread between the two values that is standard.

    Go to Edmunds.com/tmv (true market value) and put in the the same car, but equip one better than the other. Then look at the spread between the dealer retail & trade in values. They will be close to the same, give or take a couple hundred.

    That is the spread I am looking for. That way, when I go shopping for a truck, I know about where I want to start negotiating.

    Maybe I should have asked, of all of you that have purchased a truck or trucks in the past, how much did you save off the asking price and where did you start at with your negotiating?

    It depends on the dealer. Some buy 25 trucks from Schneider's fleet and try to get a certain price. Some buy a truck here and there and then resell it. I'm impressed if the truck has been detailed, makes a big difference. Also, trucks sitting on a lot a long time will probably go for less $$$.

    O.K. I hope this will show what I am trying to explain and what info I'm lookin for.
    The first truck is an XL equipped truck... there is a $3k spread between retail & trade in. The second truck is a Lariat with a $4k spread. This is what I am looking for in general for big trucks.

    If the big truck is a 386 Pete spec'd for fleets, there may be a $5k spread from retail to trade in. If it's a 386 Pete spec'd for an O/O, there may be a $7k spread. This a general spread. I understand there are variables in spacific specs, but they are small.
    If I go looking at a fleet spec'd Pete, then I know there is roughly $3k I can play with. If it is O/O spec'd, then I have roughly $4k to barter with.

    When I go look at the 386 Pete spec'd for an O/O & is listed for $54K, I know that starting my negotiating at $49,500 is a realistic number and the salesman knows he has an informed customer. This will allow me to either get a good deal at a fair price or let me know that he is pushing me to spend more than I want on a truck that I know is not worth what he wants.

    I hope this clarifies what "general" number I am looking for. I also want to thank you guys for responding to my post. Please don't take my previous responses personally! I get a little frustrated with myself when I don't explain properly what it is that I'm looking for.
