Aussie, I have a question for you. You say that you had menengitis, but here you are mentioning the Herpes virus. Are your doctors saying that they are related? I ask this because a few years ago when I got my tonsils out, I came home from the hospital with a cold sore and now I get them frequently. I have been a migraine sufferer for 20 years. From tracking my migraines and cold sores, they are highly related. So I picked up with interest when you mentioned headache, cold sores, and menengitis all in the same breathe.

I had never had a cold sore or have I ever displayed any signs of one but probably every person carries the virus in the back of their throat and it takes something to trigger it of and in my case it entered the spinal and brain fluid and was probably from a tooth extraction done 3 days before I went down sick. Now I suffer the after effects of having Meningitis - headaches, light sensitive, some loss of hearing, confusion, extreme tiredness, body thermostat out of wack.
You also have to realize that it can be caused by the exchange of money, sharing a smoke, some one not washing their hands etc etc etc. Look up the Meningitis Foundation of America {MFA.org} or any similar website and it will give more detail than I ever could - they are mentioned in a previous posting this article.
I hope this helps. -

Have now started back into a field similar to my work in Computers - have worked with IBM, Dell, Compaq and HP in Network Administration. Now doing assembly and testing of equipment that handles Cell Phone distribution from the towers you see every where, Though still getting the feel for the work, my mind seems to be working better than it was - ailments are still hitting me but I'm starting to remember things now as my brain has to work. This may be the best thing for me as I can forget for 8 hrs what I've been through and only have a 6 mile drive though at night the realization of how lucky I was to survive comes back and as my marriage has broken up, reflection can take a toll as I can't remember what I went through - I'd be happier if I could as it would clear up the blank spaces left and that I'm starting to believe is worse than getting Meningitis as no matter what can be explained to me, having no recollection, or just bits and pieces, is the worst type of torture - there is up to 6 months of my life that is missing or just a jumble of disassociation like a jig saw puzzle.
Have often thought about heading back to Australia and buying a block of land on a beach and spend the rest of my time just lazing about or head back into the back woods of the Snowy River area where I spent a lot of my younger years - the same area where they made "The Man From Snowy River" seeing Nature at her best and worst.
Though I've faced death in combat and been wounded, that did'nt scare me as I could see my adversary but this does as the enemy is invisible - maybe it's an unfounded fear but it's hard to comprehend and accept something so small as a virus can do so much damage and leave after effects so devastating it can ruin your life. -
Dear Aussie,
For me to say I understand doesn't help you much but I had to turn my CDL in 4 years ago and I know your hurting.
I had a drunk hit my personal car after mothers-day outing with one of my sons. It took away my livelihood and he didn't even get a ticket because he was friend with the local cops.
I have a very bad back and am on morphine for the rest of my life.
I really still hurt when I am around trucks. But like you I know I would be a danger to others I would never want to do that.
God bless you and help you with you illness's but just think of how wonderful it is to have some one like your wife who loves you and is there for you. You did a very brave and good thing in turning in your CDL
