    I am located just south of Peace River and my brother ( http://tetachukholdings.com/ ) is located just outside on Dawson Creek.

    Yup, it's called a driver shortage. Every trucking company I know is "always looking for drivers" because there is simply more trucks and work than there are drivers that want to work.

    There ain't a driver shortage, never has been, never will be.

    So, your brother is "always" adding to his fleet...is that what you are inferring?

    You obviously don't understand how a boom town works. I see it here all the time. We are getting our first Tim Horton's and they have been trying to hire staff for months. They open in a few weeks and they are still well short of what they require. I think they are starting at $15.00/hr.

    Then you hire people and pay them more than they are worth, then the mine or mill hires them at wages you can't even hope to compete with, and the cycle continues.

    50% of all work that gets done here is by out of town contractors. That's equipment operators, welders, carpenters, electricians, gas fitters, plumbers, and on and on. Wages here are high too, house aren't too bad. Way over priced for what you get but still if you are willing to buy a dump and fix it up yourself okay. Materials to build things are 20 to 50% higher than anywhere else. A trip to Int'l Falls MN will save you about half on almost anything.

    Yes there are labour shortages in many places, but maybe not where you are. There is also almost no OTR hauling going on here. All local or regional work.

    Thanks Mr Obvious.

    My point (that you missed) was that his brother is ALWAYS hiring and I doubt that his brother is ALWAYS expanding. Therefore...it's not a shortage it is driver churn! Better hiring practices would slow/stop the driver churn. Just because you have more work doesn't mean you have to expand. Sonetimes getting rid of your slowest paying customer or the most demanding customer and utilizing your assets for a new customer or an increased workload is better than growing.

    I did understand what you were getting at, but you don't understand how these boom towns work.

    You mention getting rid of your slowest paying customer for instance. Many of these places are single industry/employer driven and you don't just get rid of your biggest customer. Here is an example....

    Trying to find a diesel mechanic here is ridiculous. There are enough trucks in this town to have a large 24 hour shop with multiple mechanics on duty. The choices however are three, and when you need work done (usually not very good work either) you need to wait days or weeks to get into the shop because they can't find guys, and when they do they quickly lose them to the mine. $42/hr plus bonuses of around $1500/qtr. How many mechanics are making that? So then you hire out of town people. 90% of them go to, and not just to the mine, but many times they move back home wherever that may be for family or maybe the wife hates the lack of shopping in the town. Many companies are forced to hire people that wouldn't have a chance anywhere else. If you show up most days and aren't too drunk you can get a regular good paying job here.

    Don't believe me, go get a job as a manager in one of these towns and see for yourself.

    $1000/mnth for an apartment
    $1500++ /mnth for a house

    Good luck though. If you were to apply for a job here, make sure you make some stipulation bout housing to be included. And be prepared to lower your standards.
