Colorado doesn't... you get a paper temporary, and they mail the hardcopy. Gotta get back there to pick up my new one.

They had a situation a number of years ago where a DMV employee was selling CDLs and regular drivers licenses to illegal aliens. They caught it on an audit of the numbered blank forms... thousands were missing.

MO will actually put an out of state "mailing address" on your license. One of my students did it. It was odd to see a MO CDL with a GA address on it.

I know States use the CDL as a revenue generator but one would think that with something as "national" as the CDL these would be issued by the DOT, just like a pilot or mechanic or dispatcher certificate is issued by the FAA. There seem to be so many different ways to be issued a CDL that it's confusing.

Having said that, if MO will give me a CDL with my Michigan authorizations and limitations and include my Michigan permanent residence address, why wouldn't I take them up on it? I don't care who issues it, really. Michigan will continue to tax my house and I will continue to do a drive-by visit from time to time...

Its a states rights thing... drivers licenses preceded the deal with pilot licensing.

Nevertheless, you need to FIND OUT what the deal is with having an out-of-state license in your state. In some cases you have a time limit before consequences start to occur. Your CDL is your ticket to employment in this industry, and you need to protect it like gold in a thieve's den!

Remember that discussion on CSA and Prime's scores? Under the Driver Fitness BASIC you'll find folks driving on suspended licenses. Is that because Prime HIRES drivers with suspended CDLs? NOPE!!!! Its because a driver wasn't taking care of business, blew off something that should have been attended to, and whichever of the several states was offended did something to get his attention. Next thing you know, you're in a weigh station at 2AM 1000 miles from home wondering why you can't drive any longer.

A suspended CDL leads to a suspended job (as in terminally suspended - usually) - means no money just about the time you have to hire an attorney to straighten out the mess. Nothing like being an east coast type with court problems in California! Add quite some time for the wheels of government to work - and now you're trying to explain away a suspended license incident to a new employer.

    DenaliDad Thanks this.
