help truck wont start

check the cable that goes from the solenoid and make sure it has current going though it...also remember...the clutch has to be pushed in aslo....this might be the problem of not showing power going to the starter from the solenoid.....make sure all connections from batt to starter are clean and tight and no burnt wires....hope this helps.

 

also in your fuse box or in the relay panel under the hood look for a srter relay....or the over grown fuse also.

 

I seen starter hots where the nut was corroded and loose a 16th of a turn.

Have someone turn the switch while you watch and see if you see some sparks fly. That will help you locate it.

Like Twilight said, a bad cable with broke strands and corroded under the crimp connector will do it too.

It's highly possible the starter brushes are wore out also.

Which engine do you have?

 

That statements confuses me a little. What kind of looks like a starter solenoid on the firewall is actually the starter relay on your truck. The starter solenoid is attached to the starter where you see the big HOT wire.

The little wire on the starter relay is your key hot and only has 12V when the key is turned. One big wire should be a steady 12V hot straight from the battery.

If you turn the key and there is NO 12V on the other relay post going to the starter, then your problem lies between the relay and the battery. Either a bad connection or bad cable. Check the battery connections for corrosion and tightness. Check your chassis ground and your motor ground for the same thing.

If any of the cables are bad, they will usually be broke strands/corroded in the last inch of the cable. Sometimes corrosion will cover each individual strand and you will get 12V with a tester. Put a load on it like a starter and your voltage will drop to zero because it can't carry the current.

 

When was the last time you checked/replaced the batteries? Not enough voltage/amperage might cause it to not spin the starter motor. Just because a test light shows power does NOT mean you have enough to actually operate the starter.

Have you tried tapping on the starter motor itself with a hammer? If you have a flat spot on the stator that the brushes in the starter motor don't touch, it means the starter motor may occasionally stop spinning at a point where there's no conduction of electricity. Rapping slightly on the starter motor might jar it enough to get contact.

 

I would say your starter is shot.... Do you know if it's the original starter??
