Ok,I',m late 50's good health after a cancer bout and looking for a new career. I would like to work 6-8 mos and then off for 3-4 months. My wife is a teacher and money is NOT my primary concern, getting back to work is. I live in central Texas and and thinking of going to a local community college and doing my training that route. I have worked all my life and hrs and putting the company 1st is my outlook...if they do well ..so will I...any "older" guys have and info I might use?

Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of older guys on here that have started over, so that shouldn't be a problem. I think your problem is going to come when you try to find a company that is okay with you taking off for 3-4 months at a time.

As the previous poster stated, 3-4 months off would be a problem for most carriers. One thing that comes to mind is the the R.V drive away/tow away companies. There are quite a few around the country, would require an investment on your part for equipment, and careful scrutiny on your part to be sure that it would be viable and profitable.
Horizon R.V. Transport and Hoosier R.V Transport have web sights to help you start your search.

If you set "requirements" when applying for truck jobs, you'll get passed over. Truck companies want to own your soul.

Just take a job and quit. As long as you don't burn bridges everything is okay. I worked for one company three different times.

You probably have to get your training in the first year before you find that smaller company. Get one year in solid and then you can call the shots after that.

Just never take breaks over 3 years or you lose your experience level.

Many companies don't like job hoppers. But one a year is considered okay.

If you can find a company willing to do this, it is really the way for an older "semi-retired" person to go. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Of course, at one point, I got stupid and decided to go full time. Then found I liked the money, so I continued full time. . .:biggrin_25513:

It really is nice to work casual. When we have other sources of income and can afford to do that, it works out really well. And if the company does it right, it can work out well for them too. The only real downside to it, is that you are never going to have a tractor to "call your home." Slip seating is OK, until you get behind a real pig. And it will happen.

You will have to check with the companies. I was doing it out of So. Utah! If you have any local driving schools, they might be able to answer that question too.
