Are there really some drivers that believe that the load will come off faster without the vapor hooked up? I hope not. Our policy, even if way out in the boonies, if it's there you better use it. Besides, I want to know where the vapors are going and not just blowing out the top of the vent pipe. I know the newer systems are closed circuit but we still have some places that you would think you're back in the 50's.

We had this common carrier dropping at this station that's in Jean NV. Maybe some of you have seen it on the southbound side. He didn't bother with the vapor and this guy comes up to him and asked him if he's required to do that. The driver telling off the guy in foul language basically told him to mind his own business. The guy said it was his business since he was the head of the clean air board for the county. The driver had to beg for his job along with writing an essay on why he wasn't using the vapor recovery system. My company told the common carrier we didn't want that driver on our racks anymore. It's just not worth it because of safety and you never know who's watching. Of course diesel is different.

You really should never try this in good ol' tree hugging California. I watched a guy do this at the Long Beach Airport one day years ago. One of those small white Ford Escorts with an AQMD seal on the door was outside the fence at the fuel farm watching him with binoculars. Ended up writing him a 10K ticket for air pollution and he lost his job at Sentinel. Looks like they watch even at Whiskey Pete's..

And sometimes it makes no sense on some of their moves they pull. We had a station in Laughlin NV were the load came out of Las Vegas. It was fine and we had been doing many for years. Laughlin is in NV and in Clark County. So all the spec's were registered and it was fine. Las Vegas loading rack went down for some time se we decide to reroute a truck from Barstow CA to Laughlin. We're just going to play on the safe side so we loaded the whole truck up with premium and sold
it at lower grades. You can do that as long as you don't go the other way and sell regular for premium. It's called giving away octane. So we thought. CA. gasoline is much cleaner that NV gas. It may not runs as good but for the case of air pollution CARB gas is a the top of the line when it comes to pollutants and by products. They control a lot of emissions by vapor pressures. I could be wrong here but I believe the higher ther vapor pressure is the more fuel will burn giving better performance. Or vice-a-versa doesn't matter. What the problem was the NV clark county air board did not like having a better type of gasoline in their county so we had to pump the tanks out, steam clean all the hoses at the pump, and then test after dropping 1000 gallons down that Clark County had their gasoline back which was not as good. It cost a lot of money so these idiots could hold a job that they should really do some study on. This happened over 20 years ago so it may all be different by now, we can all hope so.

But like it's been said before, you never know who's watching you. We had a driver that lit a smoke on the freeway and at the gate going into the loading racks he was told his services were no longer needed. He lit up right next to a VP. So do it as everyone is watching you but do it the same way every time.

so, when you unhook the vapour recovery hose from the trailer, does it open the vent on that recovery pipe on the trailer?

I am trying to remember how it works. the coupler pushes a lil plunger that closes the vent near the top of the trailer on the recovery pipe...........

I drove tank awhile ago, and kinda forget how that worked? If it does not, is the tank not full of gas vapours?

we had only like one site that had it.

    does that make any sense?

That's OK I was banned from the Conoco racks in Wilmington for pulling off a Scully and driving away...It was a long night and I was tired..But REALLY, lighting up a cigarette as you are pulling INTO the racks, I wasn't even that bad...LOL

We had one place we top loaded everything. Smells really good holding the dead man handle with clouds of vapors collecting under the canopy. This one place we delivered to had three small regular tanks, two of which a lock drop would not hook up to, so you had to put on an adapter and stick it into the tank. The big tank would hold one large compartment, and the small tanks were each too small to hold any one compartment.
We had to stick the drop into the tank, and listen until you heard the fuel gurgling, then shut off the valve, and move to the next. A real smelly job doing that place, and easy to overfill onto the pavement.

We had one driver that smoked. He was droping at this place for his first time, and the boss decided to check up on him. He said he drove up, and there was this driver standing over the tank with the straight pipe in it droping gas. He said you could see the vapors waving through the air around the guy, and he was smoking a cigarette.

Some people are just too stupid.

I didn't get banned, but I was threatened with firing for tieing off a dead man handle while top loading in order to try to get away from the fumes.

What was really fun was hauling a load for one of those independent oil co's that called around to find out the cheapest gas prices for the cut rate stations; Red Head, Speedy, Certified etc. You had to mix the ethanol and gasoline and raffenate while it was being loaded. For example you would have to load the ethanol at Ashland, the raffenate at Texas Eastern, and the gasoline at Marathon or Sohio. You had to override the scully, a real PIA, at each place. This was mid 80's.

what is "raffenate"? and did they pay you for all that extra work to get loaded?

where i worked we tended to get screwed in that situation.
