Why Pay for Health Insurance?

My question is for those who have the opportunity to purchase health insurance from their company. Why? I always bought into the idea that having health insurance was a big deal to have. Then I was in a car accident. Was transported by ambulance to the hospital, 3 days in the hospital for the first surgery, overnight on the second surgery. Multiple follow up appointments with the orthopedic surgeon.
I paid my $34 a week out of my paycheck.
    I paid my $2500 deductible.
Then I had a 90/10 copay on top of that. Paid it.
When I got a settlement because the accident was the drivers fault (I was a passenger) the health insurance company tried to take ALL of it. Why? Because by law they are allowed to reimburse their expenses. :biggrin_2551: Isn't that why I had insurance and paid out over $6000, so they would pay the total bill? Isn't that the SERVICE I paid for? So in a sense, I paid $6000 so they could take another $34,000 in reimbursement from my settlement. And then they say they could take 100% of my settlement, but they feel it only right to take just 33%. Gee, thanks!
So fast forward to my next job. Same deal. $34 a week out of my check. $ 1700+ a year. Then a $2500 deductible BEFORE ANYTHING is covered. Eye doctor? Pay I pay the whole bill. Get sick? I pay the whole doctor bill until all those total $2500, THEN insurance starts to pay. So I get to pay $4200+ out of pocket before they pay a dime. :biggrin_25516:
I don't get that sick. I don't need that many pairs of contacts or glasses.
So when I signed on with my current contractor and she had no insurance I was completely fine with it. When the whole government mandated insurance kicks in I'll explore my options. Until then, I'm not giving the insurance companies $4200+ of my money for NOTHING!

Anybody else have the same feelings?

    Feel lucky.

My deductible is even larger. In addition, they also decide what they will cover and then I have to pay for it.

Why even bother to have it?

In my case, I can lose my home and all because the medical guys like to file liens to get their money too.

Either pay the insurance and still get screwed OR

gamble and pay doctors who will not wait for payments.

And I love all the people who ##### that the "Obama" care is going to tell you what you can and can't get done. Excuse me, we already have that. The health insurance companies dictate what the doctors can and can't do now. I was sent home because a college grad with United Healthcare said they would not allow another day in the hospital even though my surgeon wanted me to stay. And now I am stuck with plates and screws in my arm because the insurance company at the time said it was not necessary to remove them, even though the DOCTOR said it should be done. Now that I don't have insurance it's considered a "pre existing" condition and until Obamacare goes in effect I can not get anything done with it.

Insurance companies are a legalized mafia.

Do you really think that it will be better under Obamacare? You think it is bad now, just wait until some bureaucrat dictates what they will cover and when you can get care. Obamacare is nothing short of an insurance bill to force everyone to purchase health insurance. The difference is that under Obamacare we will pay higher premiums for less coverage and the rationing of healthcare, especially if it comes under a single payer system, which is the ultimate goal.

The only good thing I see about the end result of ObamaCare is that they cannot deny coverage based on preexisting conditions.

Everything else is nothing more than a bonus plan to the insurance industry.

Throw it all out including the insurance industry and move toward the types of medical care other civilized countries have.

Otherwise, we will see the end of health care to all except those that can actually afford to pay at the time of the care.

You think your deal was bad. I paid health insurance my whole life. This past deal I had a $1500 deductible and have met it the past 5 years.

Then Oct 2010 my health started deteriorating. By the end of the month I was medically disqualified and went on medical leave seeking to get fixed. Jan 1 with no warning or choice, my deductible was raised to $5000. Mar 30, I was rushed to the hospital with 99% blockage. Mar 31 while in the hospital I was terminated and insurance cancelled.

I lost track after paying $8400 out of pocket. I had to do an emergency withdrawl on my 401K.

Then they played games with me and refused me Cobra for 3 months. After getting the state on their arse I finally get a Cobra letter stating if I pay the 3 months back pay, pay $400 a month future payments and a $5000 new deductible, they'll cover me. I told them a few choice words.

Luckily I had the VA to resort to.

Obama care and our whole health system is so screwed up. It's okay if you have the flu or something like that. Get really sick and you are thrown to the dogs.

Doctors and hospitals are open to charge you what ever they feel like. There are no price gouging laws or anything to protect the consumer. My medications cost me $10 a day. Why should I have to pay the hospital $165 a day for the same daily dosages?
Why should my EKG or other tests be read and charged by 3 doctors? Isn't one doctor confident enough to do his job? Why should I have to pay a specialist $440 just to talk to him for 4 minutes?

You just raised my blood pressure. Now I have to go take a pill. :)

You need to read on it some more and not just listen to the radio! its not gonna be that bad. and if you have a major illness such as I then you will know that bureaucrats are already making those decisions. and you have no appeal right which you will have after Obama care goes into effect. Been there done that!

My recent doctor visit, which all they did was check blood pressure and renew a prescription that I have had since 2003 cost me 193.00.

If I had went to a doctor in Dallas according to a sign, it would have been 49.00.

I no longer go to a doctor for anything except this one prescription since I cannot find anything over the counter to treat it.

God forbid an ambulance call which doubled after the county took it over using my tax money and they expect me to pay again.

In between the hospital and VA, my doctor held me hostage and would only write me month to month prescriptions just so he could collect on a monthly office visit. Now the VA gives me 6 month prescriptions which I get 3 months at a time in the mail. I like that part.

Another thing is every gov't job I had in the past, my health care was paid for with a zero deductible. Courtesy of the tax payers. No wonder they have no idea what we go through.
