First ask yourself if trucking is something your REALLY want to do. It's a lifestyle, not a job and very few are truly happy out here but they are remain because it is what they know and understand and accept, and they have learned to deal with the negatives which are many. If you are single and plan on staying single, and quality family time is not a huge requirement for you, driving may be an option for you, otherwise, the net financial result may be no better than a full-time minimum wage job at McDonalds ... at least at McDonalds there is plenty of room for advancement.

One could write a book on the pros/cons of driving OTR [in the real world] and probably 3/4 of this book would involve the cons. I'm not trying to discourage you, I am trying to make sure you have FULLY researched what trucking is about if you end up where most CDL graduates end up which is huge mega-carriers that swap seat warmers on virtually their entire fleet every month with turnover rates that boggle the mind.

    Lokix Thanks this.

Woah, hey, tone down the optimism there guys, wouldn't want to get my hopes up! :p

I fired off a few emails to a few places with points raised here and through other searches. I probably won't hear back until next week some time.

I keep hearing mixed things... that this is either going to be a terrible idea to do... or that those people saying it's going to be terrible are overreacting. I've wanted to drive a truck since I was about 6 years old. I'm thirty now, so I think maybe it's time to take steps towards what I've wanted since I was a kid... Still, I'm nervous. Hopefully, if I do do it, it won't be for nothing.

I am perpetually single, so I guess there's no worry about family life getting in the way.

From what I understand 99% of the CDL school grads go to one of the mega-carriers for their first year so that they can get that ever important one year of experience, so that they can go to somewhere else that's better. I'm pretty sure I can put up with the ######## that those mega-carriers can dish out, until I'm able to change companies.

You say that 3/4 of the book would be cons... care to list some? The pros too, if you like.
