First and foremost, welcome back to the forum!!

Sorry your health and you living situation took a turn for the worse, but it sounds obvious you have family helping you out, and positive thinking will get you and your family through this.

At least you both have jobs!! That's more than a lot of families can say right now. Again, welcome back, hope to be hearing from you again real soon!

P.S.: After reading your original post, I'm sure you stopped a LOT of potential employees from going to the Big Blue Screw.

Wow!!! That's terrible. I'm glad I never worked for a big company. I'm sure they aren't all like this, but it would sure make me think twice about a career in trucking, with Werner anyway. Sorry about your situation, best of luck to you. Hope you got your bp under control.

I worked for them about 6 months back in 2001. After having to spend hours trying to find a place to wash out the reefer, (you don't get paid for) I left. I got tired of that crap. Im sure you can make good money operating with reefer. But not with Weener.

I would have waited one day, maybe two for them to come up with an OTR truck in Omaha....then I would have went home and forgot about the whole thing. I would NEVER have agreed to jump in a day-cab to run a load to Utah and then down to Fontana in the first place. Even straight out of school.

Important that 'newbies' read this this NOW to avoid making the same mistake.
Regardless of how excited you are to get started with a company, DO NOT let your excitement trick you into doing something like this just for a job.
They most likely HAD a sleeper truck to put the original poster in....but they needed someone willing to take a day-cab to California for them....and who better to trick into it, than a green-horn that is just happy to get his/her foot in the door.

What I've learned after 7 yrs w/ Werner is this: actually it may apply to many co's. Most dispatchers only look at distance of load in relation to where you are & where it needs to go. They don't consider weather, terrain or weight of load. They also have timelimes on when a load was promised to be there, such as a Just In Time or High Service load(meaning in order to get the load your company had to agree to a time frame of the customers choosing, sometimes receiving more money for a faster delivery) these loads take priority in getting it placed out to a driver. Therefore you as the driver must not accept any load if you don't think you can do it within the given timeline. Tell your dispatcher by sending a late load message and enter the time which you think you can deliver & why (Ex: a heavy load like 45,000lbs wuld take longer to cross the Rockies than one weighing 10,000; or a snowstorm is expected). If it's not acceptable the dispatcher shuld remove it from your board. If they tell you to run with it anyway the odds are it's eta can be later than the time given.(Sometimes money hungry dispatchers think if they can push you faster by assigning you a quicker eta they will make more $$, dont fall for it, even JT high priority lds can sometimes be later!).
At this point I also call the shipper or consignee & let them know I think my best eta is. As long as you've entered in your delayed message within 1/2hr of your arrival, you will not be charged for a late ld. Remember you can always try to contact a dispatchers supervisor if needed. I've done that when assigned a load going in the opposite direction of my hometime when I had a doctor appt. Having said all that, there's an old saying which goes like this -" A dispatcher can make you or break you", so don't let them break you out of their need for control, power, or money etc! Request a new one if the one you have won't listen to you. I've had to change mine a few times! One of them I switched out only after 3 days cuz I saw right away she didn't care what I said. Good Luck, it's really not a bad company to start with, you can always switch after learning the ropes.

Good story at the start of this thread. God forbid that happen to me. Pretty sure I would have went off the deep end when they gave me a day cab to drive. Which would have made it to my front door. Plannin on working for werner driving krogers dedicated, as soon as paperwork clears. Be safe drivers.
