Hello 1 and all. I'm wishing to become a OTR company truck driver but there are some strike's against me & I was wanting the opionion's of you good people to possibly help me out. I have 4 things on my criminal record, #1- "recieving & conceiling stolen property over $100" which is a felony from 1999, I broke into a car and stole a stereo because I'm a moron. #2- "possesion of marijuana" from 1999 as well but thats a misdomeanor & it was a small amount, none the less, I was a "high" moron. #3- assualt & battery from 2001 which is also a misdomeanor, I punched a guy in his face at a bar. & #4- OUIL that i received with the assualt & battery because I left the bar driving in my car after punching the guy in his face. I've seen company applications that have said that they will consider criminal records, but I'm wondering if I have a snowball's chance of being hired. Even for some of these companys that people sometimes slam on here. I figured that since I have all this against me, that if a company did hire me, I would put up with just about anything just to drive the big rig. I hav'nt drunk or indulged in drug activity's since 1999 for drug's & 2001 for alcohol & i've done some growing up & have paid my debt back to society. but a felony is forever. I am admitting that I was totally out of control but growing up in southwest Detroit, my record make's me look like a boyscout compared to others. I always see that phrase "everybody deserves a second chance" and right now I am hoping to be in that "everybody" catagory. I received treatment for drug abuse in 1999 & alcohol abuse in 2001 and I havnt been in the least bit of trouble since & the OUIL is the only thing on my driving record. I have nothing to tie me down & I am willing to be out on the road all year long if need be and sit in a truck waiting for a load for long periods of time without complainig. My father was a truck driver & I went on runs with him in the late 80's & early 90's so I know that it's the career that I want, but I dont know if that career want's me. Any advice would be great. negative or possitive. just as long as it's sincere. Thank You for your time.

Nowadays it is not the companies that have an issue with your records as much as the government - obtaing your CDL will be the first step that gives you grief...

check with your local DOT office or call your local license branch...

I would go talk to the people at the DMV. I know someone with your background and they had no problem getting their CDL. It may vary from one place to another, I don't know.

Getting your CDL is not going to be the problem. Getting a job will be.

Here's a rundown of what a company will see on your app. A hothead, with a tendency to resort to violence. A thief. A person willing to break the law, if it suits his immediate needs.

You might actually get a job. But, it's not one that you really want. Rest assured you will be abused to no end with that company. And the pay will barely cover the cost of living.

I Wouldnt Care If I Only Drove 2 Miles A Week, For 2 Years Straight, For 2 Cents A Mile. Just As Long As I Can Get My Foot In The Door And Prove That I Would Be A Great Asset To The Company And To The Indrustry. It's What I Want To Do And Someone Will Eventually Hire Me. I Know It's The Life For Me And I Wont Stop Trying Till I'm Satisfied. The Money Is Not Why I Want To Do It And The Cost Of Living Is Not A Problem Either. I Have Ton's Of Support And Money And If It Took 20 Years To Become A Truck Driver, I Guess I'll See Ya On The Road In 20 Years. They Say Find Something To Do That Will Make You Happy And I Have. The Whole Lifestyle Suits Me To A Tee. I'll Keep Ya Posted Though. And Hopefully Sooner Than Later, I'll See You On The Road.

The part that stood out to me about your post, was the fact that you've grown up. People change and when you get a job driving, that will be the time you can prove it. Most of us have pasts we'd rather not have brought into the present especially those years of growing up. Be sure you don't have anger issues left before you get on the road and you'll do fine:)

No More Anger Issues, Especially After My Brother Passed Away On May 2nd, He Was 33, Only 2 Years Older Than Me. And Then 27 Days Later My Father Passed Away. Really Puts Things In To Perspective. I Quit Doing Immature Things In 2001 When I Received My Ouil And Assualt. I Went To 90 Meetings In 90 Days At A.a. And Then 5 Times A Week For 2 Years After That. I Went To A Early Recovery Program For Alcoholics And Anger Management At My Own Expence. 40 Days Of Community Service And 30 Days In Weekend Jail. And About $5,000 In Restitution And Court Fees. I Have Not Been In No Trouble Since Then And I Dont Put Myself In Situation Where It Is A Possibility. I Dont Really Have That Much Freinds Anymore Because All They Do Is Party On The Weekends And Risk There Licences And Other Peoples Lifes When They Go Out To The Bars And Get Drunk. I Really Didnt Like That Lifestyle Then And I Was Just Trying To Fit In, So Its Not Something That I Miss. I Guess I'm One Of Them Guy's Though That Had To Learn Something The Hard Way. Lesson Learned.

you will want to work with a company for 1-2 years then you could get a better paying job.

we had a felon in our class and he was the first one of us to get his license.
the school had sent 5 students to the dmv and they had to re test.
but he was the 6th student and he got his.

I believe he went with Carolina cargo and he is going to stick it out for a year.

you sound like you have done alot of growing up. it is possible, although a little harder, but possible. remember ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. if that is your dream, don't give up. my husband also has a little bit of a record.things looked bleak in the beginning, but he didn't give up. all you need is a foot in the door. and if you keep pushing, you will get it. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!:biggrin_25526::biggrin_25526::biggrin_25526:
