The do have a test devise that reads the pollution of engines, coupled with licence plate readers and big computing power they can with two infered towers analyse the exhaust, read the licence plate, know what the unit was built with, and know what the pollution specs should be. They have had the system, for years, they set them up on a hill so the units are under power, or on an on ramp, attached to the signs, and read the results. They scan from a height of 15 Ft to 1 inch. they do the cars as well as the trucks and can do multiple lanes of traffic, They do not have to stop you, or anything they will get you at the next scale. Or just send you a notice, and give you a short time to respond to a location for inspection.
With the budget cuts it would be a money maker for companies making you truck compliant, before you can precede, supply a lot of jobs, and with the fines a money maker for the states.
Most of the pollution tecnoligy was developed in Europe, They had the ULSF a long tome before we did. The reason the off highway, and trains were allowed to use old tecnoligy and fuel was so the oil companies had a longer change over time table.

I have heard rumours that austrians have something like that but never heard anyone get a fine. I still don't believe that they can see if your engine is EPA or Euro this or that compliant, it needs a very accurate equipment. Must be smoke/opacity only, especially if it has been around for years.

The company is out of California and has been around for years. They use infered and other light sources and can scan the exhaust very quickly and it gives a very accurate emissions test.
I watched a video of it set up on an on ramp, it was split screen and it gave the results, withing 5 seconds, and it had all the information on the vehicle, owner, make, model and EPA specs, along with the test results.
The licence plate reader, to owner was tecnoligy borrowed from those little radar vans that gave you speeding tickets.
I have no knowledge that the system is being used, it is out there and ready to go.
    Just a thought!
People keep talking about the older engines as if they were great. They talk about the high sulphur fuel as if it was great.
I made a lot of money fixing them to me they were great!

I sugest they use laser air testers.

I'd like to know what emissions they can test, hard to believe they can get very accurate results from for example NOx just driving by.Maybe just those that exceed the limits very clearly. In Europe problem would be getting the Euro class from something like 40 different nationalities of the vehicles.

I retired in July of 2007. I am finishing the building of my shop, I do not want to work the 12 to 16 hour days. I get enough work on the little stuff.

Its already here and being used in VA around the Washington DC region. Its only being used for testing purposes. The government isn't using it for enforcement purposes. I always go through them with the truck idling and the clutch shoved in, plus my trailer plate was illegible. Unless the camera could see through the aluminum spreader lip

I would be inclined to believe if all our diesels were being fuelled with these injectors and perhaps some sort of biofuel, non of this emissions testing would be necessary.

Perhaps as well we could average much higher MPG's throughout the trucking world. Making a huge positive impact on reducing pollutant output even with the slightest increase in fuel economy per truck.

But then again... using a fuel from a living plant with much easier carbons to break down for the plants still growing, as well as creating a more complete fuel burn aided by incredibly high injection pressures, causing very good atomization, isn't as easy as making us all have huge filters and urea. LOL
