The numbers are right, but nobody has talked about the total. One cone is a disqualification, as is getting out of the truck wrong. You get one free get out and look while backing along with one complete reset. You can do one pullup while backing without penalty but it can only be so long (about the length of the tractor). Since the zero scores are right next to the disqualification scores in the forward stop and right turn you really don't want to play that game. It's best to shoot for the 4 point scores all through in order to keep from needing a zero score to pass.

Hmmm, I remember during the backup test that he said I could reset 2-3 times, dont remember exactly, but I know for sure it wasnt one.

I also attached the route I took last time, forgive the crappy lines, I didnt want to cover the road names and didnt want to take an hour to make it look nice.

The maximum points allowed is 11. 12 points is a fail. I got a 0 on my pull up and straight back. I was satisfied with a 3 on my 45 and took plenty of room on the 90. Passed with 7 points.

I agree, the test is not ideal. We spent most of our time practicing for the test or driving down state highways through small towns. I have never even attempted a blind side back or parallel parking. I am looking forward to my time with a trainer because I know I still have MUCH to learn. I am well aware that schooling made me a CDL holder, NOT a truck driver.

The only thing I can add,if I remember correctly is that with the pullups you get one free one as pointed out, about a truck length. If you take more than one or a long one it is up to the examiner if they will take off points. Up to 3 points off just like forgetting hazards when backing.

    Good Luck
Remember it is a skills test not a speed test. Relax and take all the time you need.

So I got the truck this afternoon and practiced skills in a vacant gavel lot for a few hours. I had six cones and set up a few things and practiced repeatedly. I was mostly worried about the alley dock but did surprisingly well today. I set up the cones and my start point as close to the test as possible based on memory and a satellite view of the facility to get the spacing from start to finish somewhat close. I completed the maneuver almost each time without having to even pull up, which surprised me. It is hard with a trailer because there is really no point of reference to when you have to start turning. When I got my Class B I didnt do a pull up as it is not really necessary but I will for sire do one tomorrow. IO have a point of reference now that I am used to the truck but it will be totally different tomorrow on the course.

I am still going into the test very nervous and prepared tomorrow but I at least have a little bit more confidence. Now I am really worried about the pre-trip. Since I am supposed to tell the instructor what I am doing I am thinking I dont really have to worry about naming things not relevant to this truck. Meaning I wont have to name things for a semi set-up. I will throw some of that into the walk through just so they know I know but I doubt it will be important since I dont have that type of set-up for the test. What do you think?

Don't sweat it. My Illinois examiner was very accommodating. We did not have to do the full 400 point pretrip (or however many point there is).

If I did not give a full enough answer he would ask again. Even prompting as needed without giving the answer.

He did not want to hear, "not bent, cracked or broken" for every single item. He preferred or should I say required... "In good condition" as the phrase.

One point, he walked me to the front of the trailer and asked if I saw three hoses? Being a literal man, I said, "well, two hoses and a electric cable." That was fine by him.

Then he asked, "can they be crossed?"

Literal man pops up in my head again... and I think "can" means is it possible. But I knew better and responded, "They should not be." That was the correct answer for him.

On the road test. take your time but not too much time. doing 25 in a 40 mph is not good. waiting to make a left turn and passing up two or three open gaps shows a lack of confidence in controlling the vehicle.

Watch those tandem tires. My examiner was watching the mirrors like a hawk looking to see if any of them even just grazed a curb!

    Thanks guys!

Yeah, when I did it over the summer the guy was really nice and actually gave me a hint or two. I am much better prepared this time.

I must point out I am upgrading, and only had the CDL in the first place, for municipal type work. So, I am testing in a vehicle similar to what I will be driving in the field.

    I failed, tried twice.

The first time I passed the pre-trip fine then crossed the line on the right hand turn. Then I waited all day to try again and failed at the alley dock.

    Aww that sucks!

at my school, almost 60% did not pass the first time. But they did eventually.

    Keep at it!
