Hunts Point Coop, Bronx. Advice>..

Hunts point is a disgusting sewer. If I lived on the east coast I would never buy produce until I could verify it did not come through hunts point. Really, its hard to believe that in the good ole USA, a place like that even exists. I've bee to open air taco stands in tijuana that were more sanitary than hunts point. Uhhhh!!! Just the memory of it turns my stomach!

got a 53-foot reefer going into Brooklyn Monday morning and need truck directions from NJ Turnpike around Elizabeth. What I've mapped so far is:

* NJ Turnpike north
* Head east on I-278
* Cross Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and pay how much?
* Continue east on I-278 and start wondering which 12'6" signs to ignore
* Should the exit be Kent Avenue?
* Or get on Rodney Street, make that triangular turn and head west on Metropolitan, then left on River?

 

you can go that way the varrazano is free coming into brooklyn but you pay going out. i think its around 60.00 going out of brooklyn .depending where your going i would go out triboro br or whitestone br.cost 27.50.i think those are the rates, i use ez pass. you can run 278 all the way around just stay in middle or left lane from hamilton ave to you get past brooklyn br.you will clear the bridges even though its marked 12'8. im not sure where you going on grand but you can get off at metropoliton ave and run that down to grand ave by the river.if you have low side of 19 on cb any dump trailer should be able to help with directions.good luck.

 

where exactly are you going in brooklyn? the directions are ok so far(kind of) give me an actual starting point and del point

 

Driver, I'm pretty sure I've been to the exact same place.

Get off on Kent/Flushing, stay straight, make the left on Kent and follow around. The place I delivered was right off Kent near Grand, you just make a right off of Kent onto the side street and they offloaded me with a pallet jack and a forklift right on the street. No dock to hit.

 

sly fox, i think you summed it up well. i feel kinda dumb posting about Brooklyn in a Hunts Point thread, but to redeem myself, I will post a Hunts Point-related post -- in fact, I'm writing this while at Hunts Point Produce right now!

I could say the horror stories are true -- kinda. Getting to the market wasn't so bad. I'm waiting hours for a door, but I also showed up hours early. The problem was a dumb S-curve headed east after the GW Bridge, right around Exit 2. The freakin' curve + 34,000 on my tandems + a well-placed pothole on the curve ripped an air bag from the trailer! Right away I heard hissing through the trailer valve and saw my air gauges drop and said, "OH, my %&$#ing %&$$, I'm going to be the one truck stopped on the freakin' Cross Bronx Expressway that's holding up traffic for miles into New Jersey!" The bag had been ripped off and punctured, I would discover at the market. But while still rolling, I downshifted to keep the compressor pumping air, and drove the mile or two down Whitlock to Bruckner Blvd to Leggett to Edgewater & Halleck to Spofford. There I was, paying my $20 at the gate with a screaming Series 60 at 1700 RPM, wondering if I could maintain enough air to deliver. Seems I've stopped the leak for now and will probably swap bags in the morning. But I think this does illustrate one reason nobody wants to go to NY. Only on the Cross Bronx has anything like that ever happened to me.

Unfortunately, the link to the nyc.gov pdf of a hunts point map posted in this thread ages ago has disappeared from the nyc site. Apparently the nyc truck route map has a half-way-decent blow-up of getting to hunts point, but i find it kinda unhelpful.

So, now all I need is somebody to suggest a mobile-repair service that'll come replace my bag without killing our pocketbooks!

 

Too funny.
I used to view hunts point as a safe haven back in the 90's, a place to sleep after delivering fish to places like the fulton fish market in manhatten and a few other late night places over in jamaica. at least at hunts point they let you in the gate. We used to go to places where the fork truck driver would come out on the street, take a skid at a time off the truck, then lock the gate behind him while he took it in to count it and sign your paperwork.

Blue Ridge farms was another honey of a spot. Paid a feller on a pink bike to go ahead of me one time to get the gaurds to open the gate when I got there.
Back before cell phones were popular, and payphones were the way to call customers, you could get yourself in a real mess in nyc, stopping at payphones to call customers for directions.
Ill never ever again pull a reefer into NYC, or anything else for that matter.
