Who is the BEST COMPANY a new owner operator should sign with?

So, 15 year old truck you bought with a tax return. New to trucking. Want to sit back and rake in the money while a driver makes it. Looking for a good, honest driver to drive a very old Freightliner for a couple of people that don't know trucking. That's a pretty tall order. What are you planning to pay and how?

I really like my older truck and have it down for a rebuild. I'm renting a 2010. In fact, I think I've rented about all of the newer tractors, excluding long hoods. I wouldn't trade my old '96 for three ProStars. In fact, I haven't really liked the volvos, cascadias, or prostars as much as my old truck. That's just personal preference, as I like LOTS of foot room these newer trucks seem to lack. I do like the KW's, but I'm not going to go into debt for one. And I DANG sure ain't looking to get into all that emissions stuff. Don't need it where I run. I tell you that to tell you this. As much as I like my old truck, I'D NEVER HIRE A DRIVER TO PUT IN IT. It would be destroyed in short order, I'm sure. I drove it to 1.8 million. That's above average, I know, but I can promise it wouldn't have happened with a hired hand.

I fix those little things that I hear and feel as soon as possible. I drive it easy and baby it. I'm SURE a driver wouldn't even notice half of the things I do going down the road. I likely wouldn't know about things until it broke down along the shoulder and I got that phone call. "This old P.O.S. quit. Come get me."

I don't know how much you think you're going to make with that old shaker, but like fortycal says, it's a tall order. Really tall. I hope it all works out for you. Really, I do, but I know plenty of guys running their own truck who could never think about affording a driver unless they had some sweet stuff to haul.

 

i dont think they bought it with tax return, i think they mean they got their tax id number, , heavy use and all that squared away.

but you are right that is a tall order to find a good honest driver to drive that puppy, now driving it yourself , that might be another ballgame.

considering where you are in miss. hauling logs might be a better option.

Doesn't Malone have age restriction on trucks? Drive it yourself and you may be able to avoid the money pit scenario at best. Use broker loads and factor everything and you would come out better than using Malone. NO offense to CRST (well not in the respect of this forum anyways).

 

With their ratings, I would hope not...They need all the folks they can get who can drive without screwing up IMHO.
For the total inexperienced like yourselves, go with Schneider and let them handle pretty much everything.
Try posting in the Schneider forum and see if you can find a decent company driver that wants to switch.
I honestly do not see how you will make money myself, but whatever floats yer boat I guess. There is a reason most of us have had one truck at a time, and driven it ourselves. Think on that.

It is not a business it is a hobby. A business would have had a plan BEFORE they bought a truck.
