I got my number over 40 years ago.
My wife's got stolen last year.
But that didn't stop anyone from addressing us by name at tax time.
I don't understand the number vs name issue myself.
I do good to remember my own anniversary. Why should I be concerned that a company with more than 1000 employees can't remember my name.
Besides, where's the fun in that? I like messing with folks that call my phone and ask for "Bob". And I tell them Bob ain't here. Are you sure you don't want to speak to Steve?

I work for a small family run company, 13 trucks, 7 drivers 1 0/0. Personally, I prefer it. There are three times when I'm a number to the company: payday, when I'm fueling, or when the railroad calls to ##### about me. Otherwise, everything is on a first name basis, we can BS about anything (and yes I've told my boss to F off a couple of times), they know I'll get the work done. Since we see and deal with each other all the time, they know when to push me and when not to push me. I've only twice in 14 ys had them give me the "c'mon I'm in a bind I need you to do this", once I turned them down, once I did it. As for working a little longer, yeah, I've done that many times, of course 13 and 14 hr days are the norm, when the busy season hits, at least 3 times a week, now when we're slow, maybe once every two weeks. But, a 15 hr day once a week is not uncommon, and I've logged a couple of 16 hr days here and there.
But, because we're small and more personalized, it takes more (for good or bad) to get fired or suspended for something. I've had 5 accidents/incidents in the 14 yrs I've been there. 2 were definetly my fault, 1 could go either way, the other 2 I was not at fault. One of those incidents cost me 2 weeks suspension/pay as well as I was charged $1,500 for the damage($3,200) (before people #####, I could have been fired instead). This last incident is the one that could go either way, our insurance paid for the damages, but even they refused to assign me the full blame. They paid just to keep it from being a hassle, but based on the 15 pics I took, and pics the customer took. The insurance company agreed that both myself and the customer were at fault. Them for not lying to me and not clearing the snow that caused me to slide into the sign and car, me for not parking on the street and unloading right there when I arrived and saw the driveway wasn't cleared. My excuse, I didn't realize it was as icy under the snow as it was, the customer clammed up. -
When I signed up for the lease, they shook my hand and called me by my name.
When I did drops and hooks, they paid me detention pay.
Now:
When I call in the first thing they want to know is my truck number.
When I scan my trips, the first line to fill out is the truck number.
When I ask for detention pay, they say they don't pay layover pay. -
I've worked for big and small companies and always in jobs where my performance is tied to my income that's why (VERY SOON NOW, FINALLY, I'M going to be in shape to start sending applications ) I want to do trucking... A GOOD COMPANY COMES DOWN TO THE number they print on your paycheck. No playing games with commissions, having to chase the payroll department, this month this, the next month another story... give me the NUMBER treatment, I'm not your friend or cousin --> I'm your employee.
