Hello, I recentely purchassed a 1999 Volvo with an N14. Since I've owned it the oil preasure only shows 30lbs. Occasionally a engine fluid warning light comes on and cut's out the engine intermitenly. Yesterday It did it 6 times on the way home and on idle the oil preasure was under 10lbs. So obviously it's time to resolve the issue. From Idle, when I give it throttle the preasure goes back up to 30lbs so I'm thinking it's the oil pump. But an oil pump is $700 so I want to make sure that's it and not a sensor or something. The engine has 970,500 on it. Any input would be greatly appreaciated

Check oil pressure with a manual gage at point of sensor. Verify correct idle speed. Replace lube filter. What engine oil are you using and how is the condition of the oil. What is your oil temp gage showing? Coolant temp? If manual gage matches sensor/truck gage values check bearings and oil pump.

Sounds like it is time for rods and mains at the very least .

I have been sing Mobile 1 Delo 15 40. I sent an oil sample off and it came back normal. The Temps are also normal. I will start with a manual sensor to see. Thanks for the info:biggrin_255:

It would also be a good idea verify fault codes to be sure that's what's causing the check lamp and derate.

I agree. If it has not been done it is time for them to be done.

Mine was the oil pump. It would alarm at low idle but not high idle and shut down whenever it felt like it. It would flash a shutdown sequence driving, at around thirty psi, but not always shutdown. Time before last was just a sensor.

The cam doesn't get close to the wear as the rods and mains do.

30 psi is not low for a N14 standard is 32 psi@ 1200 rpm with fresh oil above 7 psi at idle and shut down below 3 psi. N14 are low pressure high volume engines. whats the mileage on your engine/ oil pump.
