Have you ever encountered a low bridge?

Black on yellow the bridge is 10 to 20 inches taller in NYC. You have been warned go under at your own risk.

Black on white, actual height, and law.

It saves on costs of replacing signs when they repave, when snow and ice do build up...

 

NYC is a nightmare.

I delivered to Pelham Mannor once.

When I got ready to leave, I had to go north, I had come in from the south. When I turned into the receiver, I saw a bridge ahead that was marked 12'4 and that was the way I had to leave.

Shipper told me I would make it, I was to chicken to do it. I walked, a half mile, to the road, and stood there for about 30 minutes, till finally another truck came along, moved to the middle and straddled both lanes and barely cleared.

If I would have drove under it in my lane it would have been trouble!!!

 

Yep, you can make it through 3, 12'6" bridges, then the fourth will really be 12'6". I always try to go into the city in the early AM so if I come to a low bridge, I won't piss off too many people. It also decreases the chance of getting shot since less people are out.

If you plan well, and are good at solving problems, you shouldn't have to worry about low bridges.

"Squiell" is Squirrel Hill Tunnel. It looks a lot lower going through compared to going through the Fort Pitt.

 

Hey it was late when I typed that, sorry, mis-spelled, lol. That's for the correction.

The Squirrel Hill tunnel is getting a "lift" over the next two years. They are going to raise the inside so the height is 14'. Actual height right now is around 13' 8". Not much wiggle room 13'6" max height for a truck. Fort Pitt is just a little taller, not by much.

 

There is a steel railroad bridge with a large patch of yellow paint on both sides reading 10ft. 4in. in large black digits/letters. Wednesday afternoon there was a Budget Rental truck setting on my side of the bridge with the top stripped off and a 50 +- year old college edukated yuppie dressed down in blue jeans standing on the curb scratching his head and not a word in the paper or on the news in a small town known for its front page flower garden winners. Very curious.

 

My trainer took us under a bridge that clearly read 13'5". Yeah....my "trainer" did this.

And get yourself an NYC truck route map. It will save you and your pocket. Off truck route fines are upward of 2k.

The Borden Avenue Bridge was shut down for awhile for repairs. Almost 2 years from what I hear. The past 2 times in the area I took a different route knowing that there was an easier way. I was having a hard time finding out if it had reopened. Anyways, found out this morning that it was in fact open. Rather than driving 5 miles through Long Island City, I got there in less than a mile off of 495.

On my way to receiver I crossed 2, 12'6" bridges. Cleared both easily. Gotta love NYC!
