Hey guys and gals,
Just registered here and read this whole thread, really good info thanks.
I'm a j-men machinist but need a career change. I have a class 1 and some driving experience with a fuel truck and body job.
I'm looking at getting in with Sanjel, Trican or a similar company. I have never done any field operations on leases and would like if someone could give me some insight on acidizing, cementing, coiled tubing and nitrogen. (job duties, money, work schedule and most importantly advancement)
Thanks -
Hey, everyone, I just signed up so I could participate in this thread to say a few things and ask a couple questions.
First I'd like to say thanks to people like Prairie Boy, Oil Patch Trucker, nitrogen,nate980,bobbyt,onetrack and all the rest who have contributed such valuable information to people like me who are planning to move to Alberta to get work and have a better life.
To preempt some questions I am 47 years old, been driving since 1990, lived in Montreal at the time working for an O.O doing long haul. Moved to N.S. in '97, have worked for a few outfits here, including Irving, switched careers in '04 (Telecommunications pole jockey) but got injured awhile back (I'm OK now) and have been unable to find work since. I'm single and have thought about heading west over the years , and have decided now is the right time for me.
I have no specialized hauling experience (over-weight, over-dimension,off-road,etc.) but my class 1 is current and my abstract is clean. I have a VERY limited amount of cash I can scrape together for this, my car is too old for the trip so I'm gonna get rid of it and fly out.
Questions. Where should I land, my research says Red Deer as it's smaller than Edmonton (I can get around easier without a car) and has rig service companies in town I can apply to. But what do you guys think?
Are there any "fleabag motel" type places in Red Deer? Reason I ask is people renting rooms seem to mostly want employed renters only, so trying to rent even a room before I find work could be problematic.
Lastly, having read the above, any final bits of advice you think I should know would be much appreciated. -
You have a class 1, you're already ahead of most who apply. As long as your physically able to handle the workload, you shouldn't have a problem getting hired on with Sanjel or Trican. There are also other opportunities that are mostly driving and pay well.
You can apply to some jobs without going there, just need to get your resume in to the right hands.rainyday lover Thanks this. -
When you fly out you will land in Calgary or Edmonton. Not sure if red deer has a passenger airport, don't think they do. Although there are jobs in both city's Edmonton is more blue collar and Calgary is more of a corparate city.

Maritme 1 send your resume out, heck, some of them may pay for your flight out this way.
Already having your Class 1 is a big step. If I was moving to Alberta tiday, Red Deer would be my choice. I'll find a link for places where you can send your resume.

Brit101 Thanks this. -
Thanks bobbyt, actually by "land" I meant which town I should be based out of.
And thanks BoomTruckin, appreciate the info and advice. -
Thanks Prairie Boy, I'll send out the resume, figured not too many bites from companies for someone 3 thousand miles away, but you're right, who knows I might get lucky.
-
Lol I knew what you meant but didn't finish my post. Red deer is a great place to be, most of the service rigs and service companies are there.
