Heavy Haul trucking

It's got it's ups and downs like anything. I grew up with it besides a little flatbed work it's all I've done. 9 yrs as a owner op. You sit a lot and dead head a lot in most cases. Also in most cases it pays better. Ive sat for a week at wind farm waiting to unloaded also sat for a week waiting to get out of new York. If you don't use your head, read and re read your permits/provision you can add up a multi thousand dollar fine in a matter of minutes. I am a company driver now getting % pay. Typical is 22 to 26 % of the load. On a 5000 $ load or more it can be a good week

 

I really enjoyed heavy haul, money can go either way, depending on the trailer you pull has some to do with it, a step deck is more versital so you can haul flat bed & some O.D. freight, with a double drop or RGN your a little more specialized & O.D. freight aint waiting at exactly every street corner, so you tend to do a lot of dead head miles wich cuts into the money if your paid on percentage.

If your with a outfit thats hooked up with some good frieght & the DH miles aint to bad you can turn some serious revinue, but as the other gent said you can loose it also, your always in close contact with DOT because of your size, weight & permit issues, a lot of face to face interaction with the man,so apt to be inspected & depnding on his mood he can make life ruff on ya.

Some times you cant get any rest because you have to drive empty all night for a pick up, you cant be late for a crane appointment, then you have to load & secure everything, place banners & flags, CHECK & RECHECK PERMITS & ROUTES !!!, hope your escort is on time & knows what he/she is doing, then once under way constantly check & watch everything.

Thers a lot of work involved & it dangerous, not at all for a lazy driver.

 

It can be a real pain in the arse... But then it can be fun,
I had a bad thing happen 2 weeks go..Lost my lease with a company I had been with for 10 years..
I also decided to get rid of my 9 axle trl.. Had it 4 years. Just not worth the hassles any more. Needing permits to move just to move it mty, and the rates being in the toilet.....

I made some good money doing heavy haul, but this year it just started bad and got worse.
So I'm down sizing and will probably run a 7 axle setup now. Got a few loose ends I need to tie up first, or just finally move to our other place full time.
Trying to talk my wife wife into us just buying a bar over there and also help my father in law with the fish farm...

 

I am lucky to be working for someone that keeps me rolling, Heavy Haul freight runs just as much as any other and pays far better than boxes or flats, if you hook up with the correct people. In 4 weeks I have only set 4 days, the loads keep coming and I keep rolling.

 

it payes way better then normal flatbed I hauled a piece to newark and it paid 7350 to me so thats a pro. but the con was one time I was 1530 pounds over waight on my permit because i filled up with fuel after i scaled and my permit was not enough and when I got to IL i was 1530 lb over and the fine was 127 $ per pound
