I am interested in obtaining my CDL from a local trucking school. BUT, in 1999 I was convicted of possession with intent to deliver a 1/4 pound of marijuana (felony). When I was caught with the marijuana I also had a bulletproof vest on that I bought from the Army and Navy store legally, however, I was charged with possessing an instrument of crime (unlawful use of body armor) which is a misdemeanor 1. I had no idea it was illegal to own. I lived in a rough part of Pittsburgh. I served one yr probation (1st offense). This happened over 11 years ago (Sept.2012 would make it 3yrs). I was young and dumb and have not been in any trouble since. I even went to college and received and Associates Degree, but cannot find a decent paying job. I have a valid DL and no points. What I really I need to know how is how hard will it be for me to find a job? I talked to the job placement person at the school and they said, "we have people worse off than you that we place." I would like a second, third, even a fourth opinion. Thanks for any insight!
Interested in truck driving school with a 12yr old felony.

drug offenses are the most diffucult to get hired in this industry.and dealing is 10 x harder.the best shot you have is to get your record expunged.or save your money and try to find a construction co. or somthing similar who would give you a shot and train you.good luck!

you really shouldn't have much of a problem with it being that old......look at the various carriers sites....they'll tell you what they're looking for and what they'll tolerate.
Best wishes.... -
I don't think you'll have any problems being that old. The AS is a plus. Most go 7-10 years and is a case by case basis, depending on the company.

I agree that a 10 year old felony can usually be overcome. There will be questions with the type of felony. Drugs are especially problematic. You won't be able to cross the border into Canada. Some carriers don't hire anyone with a felony, regardless of the time elapsed. Nearly all who do accept felonies will do so after 10 years as long as there is nothing else on your record. You will find a lot of felons in this industry. Some companies still believe in second chances.

i would call companies before school and ask if they would hire you.

Intent to deliver conviction, im not sure if a transportation company will look at that and say no to you for fear thinking that you may try it in company truck, im not saying you will at all, but will they? Good luck to you and seems u changed your ways.

Good Luck !!Rick_C Thanks this. -
Things are changing daily in the hiring of new drivers. Companies are cracking down for CSA but on the same hand there are fewer drivers and so companies have to let up a bit.
The best thing to do, apply to all the trucking companies and see which ones will give you a pre-hire letter. This pre-hire letter will will give you an idea of which companies would hire you. If you are not receiving any pre-hire letters, or just one pre-hire, you should reconsider entering the trucking industry right now.Last edited by a moderator: Jun 14, 2012

Some companies will take you and some will not. You can see on the trucking company's website if they take felonies. The bad part that I see is the type of company that will take you will not be as good as some and you'll be limited. People can say what they want but it's only common sense to know that a good company will want the best drivers they can get. With the industry open to so many drivers the companies can be picky. I not judging you because we're all stupid at times. I'm only conveying what I've seen. Plus I'm talking about generalities and not every company out there. I'm sure there have been some drivers with a record that have landed a good job. I just think you'll have a harder struggle and with your degree I believe you could do better in another industry.
