Having never traveled by bus, I have a few questions/concerns that GH was unclear on.

It's a 2 day ride form Cal to Montana, and I am wondering how/where you are supposed to sleep? I guess it's on the bus, but sleeping sitting up in a chair rolling down the highway seems impossible to me.
    I dunno...
I will leave Saturday at 1pm, and will arrive in MT Sunday at roughly midnight, and will have to be in the class/yard for orientation at 8am.
I hope the coffee in MT is triple prescription strength.:biggrin_25518:

I see very few stops longer than 5 minutes on the rout.
We will go through 4 states.
I guess they don't feed yo on the bus, and you will be at the mercy of whatever place they stop at, so I will have a pocket full of protein bars.

    Bag storage:
They tell me I am allowed 1 bag stored away, and 1 carry on.
I can pay extra... a lot extra...for extra bags.
    Anybody get past that?
I am not letting my laptop out of my sight, and I have like 4 med sized bags I need to take that I don't want getting damaged, like my CPAP machine. Hard to fathom paying $35-up ea to store this stuff....but if I have to I will.

Anyway, without rambling any further, I am curious what your travel experiences with Greyhound were like.

i "greyhound" 2 times in my life going to an orientation.

after that, it was either NO orientation, or the train.

then i "Amtraked" 2 times going and coming from orientation.

after that, it was either no orientation or flying.

i flew home once, and after that NO MORE out of state orientations..!!

seriously..?? the bus DOES STOP for you to get "some food", but he ain't gonna wait will you sit down and have a 27 course meal...!!

you get your crap, get back on the bus.

you sleep on the bus, you use the bathroom on the bus

you smell all the other peoples food and body odor, and if you're REAL LUCKY, the toilet when it is full...

    good luck, you'll need it.

make sure you keep your valuables close to you AT ALL TIMES< make sure you put a lock on your luggage.

i never carried NO MORE than the one bag, a t any time.

    again, good luck to you.

Taking a long bus ride can vary from long and boring, to long, boring and miserable(if the bus is full).
You should get an itinerary, which will list the stops you are taking along the way. Generally if it has a 30 minute stop listed, there is some food around.
Do not expect to get food or do anything at transfer locations, as you have to keep all your bags with you until you get on the next bus, which if it is heavy, you will want to move as little as possible.
Pack some drinks and snacks in your carryon, and bring a pillow.
The newer buses have Wifi and chargers, but I only got one new bus on a 3-leg trip, so don't expect it.
The major comfort indicator is how crowded the bus is and if there are crazy people on the bus, otherwise it is just dealing with boredom. If there is enough room to get a row to yourself, it can be tolerable. There are toilets on the bus, but you should also have enough stops to use facilities along the way.
Sleep as much as you can, 'cause it makes the time go by.
    Good luck

i would leave a day early so you can get a goodnights sleep before orientation.falling asleep during orientation is a no-no and more often than not will earn you a trip home(at your cost)i agree amtrak or flying or rental car is the way to go.

Leaving early is not possible, so I will just have to deal with it.

I am stomping on my suitcase right now to stuff as much crap in there as possible.
Maybe I'll run my clothes over with the truck just to flatten 'em out.lol.

You mean to tell me that there is not one single company in the whole flipping state of California that will hire you?

    Realy?

I wouldn't ride a bus across town let alone from California to Montana for any job let alone a truck driving job.

If they wouldn't fly me in then I wouldnt go to work for them !!!

But then i am an old grouchy fart ! So I guess I should not be the model by which you pattern you life after...... Just saying.....

I would have flown! Most companies will reimburse you the cost of a flight up to the cost of bus ticket. So you don't end up paying a whole lot more for an hour and a half flight instead of a two day bus trip. I have ridden the bus once and that is as high as that number will ever get!

I'm with Gizmo! Been there, done that next orientation will be within one tank of gas!

Take a handful of benadryl or nyquil before you embark on your journey!

I am a grouchy old fart too.
One that has been unemployed for years, and does not have a spotless past.
W/S has a good rep, and they are willing to take me, so.
