Hello- New to the forum. I've been thinking about a shift in careers....I've been reading a lot of forums- I've read this one start to finish (just about gave up during the whole thing with the trainer guy LOL) and have had a lot of questions answered already but I still have a few left! I read the review of Central's CDL school and training on Truckingtruth.com, too. I have a close family friend who has been a driver for many years, and I've been picking his brain a bit as well. You guys seem to be a good bunch when you're not POed at someone- I'll try not to be one of THOSE....
Anyway- I'm 49, in good overall health, no kids or GF, and no bills other than payments on a double wide mobile home I bought a couple years ago- if I had no one living in it, my sum for all bills would be around $1200 or so. I'm considering the Central program, with the possibility of selling my home and going OTR and not looking back! Looking back all I see is getting building maintenance type jobs and being laid off- 4 jobs in the last 3 to 4 years with about a year of that time unemployed and I'm sick of it. I gather this might be a problem with Central? It's reduction of force lay offs, not firings due to any fault of my own with one possible exception being laid off due to a bad fit with the company after 2 months, and one where I relocated....I'm not sure if these would bad mouth me or not but I doubt it.
I had a bad year last year- being unemployed most of it, and I lost 3 members of my immediate family. My younger sister after a couple years of fighting colon cancer, as well as both of my grandfathers due to age....so I smoked some pot to try and help me through it but I've since stopped completely- I should be okay except for in the event of a hair test. I already saw here that Central does urine tests, and it sounded like it was those tests exclusively- hopefully so.
One thing I hadn't seen mentioned: I did have a felony once, but it was in 1986 for possession controlled substance (coke) when I was young and stupid....Would a 26 year old charge bar me? 20 years ago I got a misdemeanor, but have been absolutely clean ever since- and none of my old offenses were for theft, embezzlement, fraud or anything of that sort. I don't even think these things are legally supposed to show up on my record after all this time, but I don't know for sure. I've NEVER had a DUI or anything worse than a traffic camera citation at a red light other than that- and even that was probably 6 years ago. I've worked jobs where I did a lot of driving- not big rigs, no, but I did put almost 50k on a company truck in about 10 months and I liked the travel itself but hated the living in a hotel for days or weeks at a time- I think living in a truck would be preferable because it would be more like home instead of a different hotel every few days or couple of weeks- I know it doesn't sound like it makes sense but to me it does!
I honestly believe trucking could be great for me as I enjoy alone time as much if not more than being around people. I think the Central program could fit me well, as I have above average intelligence so I believe the speed of the training would not be tough for me to handle.
I feel embarrassed about opening up like this to you all, but I thought perhaps if I did I could get some good answers....Sorry for the long post my first time on the board and thanks in advance for any help and info- you all have already been very helpful and informative!

On the felony i would talk with their security department, the others shouldnt be a problem. Be sure you afe cleared by them to include the persons name that cleared you. If not its am immediate bus ride home just be honest and dont leave anything out and whatever you do dont lease.

Hello I thought I would toss my hat in as a Central insider. I am a trainer here at Central and will do my best to help answer any questions people have. Not trying to step on any toes just thought another voice could help. I also posted my educational experiances under the "Follow me through Central" thread as I went through TDA at CRSWVC and the training the trainer program.

Welcome GeetarGuy! Its great you are honest however you are going to get a raft of crap from others! Personally I could care less what you did in your past. I would however advise you to remain anonymous. You never know who is lurking on here. Central is a great company. My wife and I drove team for them and loved it there. The number one reason I would recommend them is because they will go above and beyond to help their drivers succeed. They did many times for us and at great lengths and we were quite impressed. Central is just large enough to keep you busy yet small enough to treat you like a human being. Make sure to be upfront and honest with them, they have a department that just does investigations on new drivers. There is a wealth of info on here about Central so I won't bore the others. Just "search" on here and you'll find it.

I see you are from Colorado. Central has a terminal there in Henderson just outside Denver. If you are going to their school you will most likely have to go to Salt Lake. That's where the main terminal is. I am sure you will be quite impressed if you go there.

I will answer any questions to the best of my knowledge but there are also many other "current" drivers for Central that can offer you some insight also.

Yeah- I forgot I was going to add 'And no I'm not interested in a lease at this time' to the end of my post, JJ!! LOL

And the facility in SLC was where I figured I would end up going, Chompi. I've been in some pretty crappy places in my life, so it wouldn't have to be all that great to be just fine with me! I could live in a tent for two weeks....but maybe not since the last time I was in SLC it was too hot in the day and a bit too cool at night- a lot like Colorado. I've heard rafts of crap before- doubtful anyone here could say anything all that bad....and if so I can't worry about them being upset with someone they don't even know who's just being honest and trying to get some honest answers about making a decent living. From what I've seen, unless I say something stupid about someone else, it seems most everyone here is here to share their experience with others in a considerate helpful way- and for that I thank you all again.
I talked to an acquaintance a few days ago who is planning to attend the CRE program....I told him to definitely check out the CRS one while he was at it.
What about other things? I was rear ended through no fault of my own in a company pickup truck a few years ago, but received no ticket or any type of paperwork whatsoever from the police....Would this show up somehow through insurance company information? I was wondering if I would have to mention anything like this to avoid seeming to not be forthcoming? My guess would be no, but....

Just remember as with any job, if you are not making it, serve 2 weeks notice, turn in your truck at a terminal, Last thing you want is an abandonded equipment on your record, lots of people get so upset they just park it and walk away,

    Shardrk Thanks this.

In my reading I've seen CRS checks your medical history- What types of things are they looking for? I'm not too gassy depending on what I eat, so I doubt I'd disgust any classmates or trainer too badly- LOL
