I may wait another couple of years, 5 years seizure free is nice, but 10 years is better.

My daughter is only 14, but having been diagnosed with Epilepsy when she was 7, is absolutely terrified of even *thinking* about getting her DL. Unfortunately, although she was controlled for many years, at *this* particular time of her life, compounded with one dumba** doc who decided to play with her meds, she's had more activity lately. (had 9 absences from school this past year alone--actually most of them were "half day" misses, but they accrue). I've held her during a grand mal and it ain't pretty.

I only say this to give some perspective on my own familiarity with the subject. If those seizures are not Epilepsy related and you can get a verifiable clean bill of health (preferably from a DOT doc as someone said) then I'd say "go for it"...After all, you'll get a feel for what's out there in fairly short order and the worst they can say is "no"....Just don't quit the warehouse job until you know for sure.

    Good luck bud.

no doctor can say with certainty that this guy will never have any more seizures. the o/p listed the things that "set him off" and trucking can and will cater to his seizures.

best he stay in a warehouse rather than on the road, so if he has one of his "episodes" he can have someone nearby to help him rather than he crash and burn and kill innocent people out there. you want that to happen...??? innocent people getting killed, just so this guy can "live a freaking dream"...?????

he's got a dammed job, he can stay there.

I know it's a long shot but you know when we're kids things come up that we outgrow. The way you're thinking we should take all the drivers that are over weight because they are more likely to have a heart attack than the fit driver. You can have a driver that is a marathon runner drop over dead from a heart attack while driving and kill those innocent people too. So where do you draw the line? Lighten up a bit and let the guy get evaluated by a doctor.

Anyone at anytime can have a seizure, even with absolutey no history of it, so I guess no one should drive and we should all live in plastic bubbles our whole lives...

he would be wasting his time and the doctors time. he ain't gonnabe a driver. no need to "lighten up", it needs to be said, he just ain't gonna make the cut, not now, not ever.

a marathon runner has less of a chance to drop dead of a heart attack than some fat slob, get real here yourself.

YES, we should all live in a plastic bubble, that way, we cannot catch the diseases of the sickly..great idea...thanks..!!!

the chances of the o/p having another seizure is highly probable over any of us "normal" people. trucking will help him have many, many more, according to his doctors diagnosis.

Not true. Here's what the regulations say. "Drivers with a history of epilepsy/seizures OFF antiseizure medication AND seizure free for 10 years may be qualified to drive a CMV in interstate commerce". If you've only had 1 seizure then it's only 5 years and then you can drive.

That's all written in the FMCSR § 391.43 Physical Qualifications for Drivers. It's the part where the doctor must follow. So what you should do if you want to drive is wait the time specified and take that regulation to the doctor that is going to sign your medical card and talk with him or her. I didn't think it would be that clear but it is.

Maybe you should reconsider driving until you further explore your medical condition and what potential triggers you may not know you could have? I understand you need to work and make a living but you should be able to do it safely and responsibly. One you get a grip on that, then go take care of fixing the medical record because what's on paper does really matter to who is reading it when they want to hire someone. Good luck and I hope all works out for you in the long run.

Gizmo_Man, I got your point already, Geez, if your gonna be a jerk about it, your not wanted here. I already made the decision to put it off a decade or so. I'm in no rush. It looked like a possibility, but right now, it's not worth the trouble. I haven't even called a single trucking company yet, and your acting like I already have my license and I'm gonna leave tomorrow. If you really think I won't EVER have the chance, I'll bet you many of the truckers and even some pilots even had problems when they were growing up but have out grown them and not had any issues for decades. Hell, for all I know, I may never get into trucking. So if all your gonna do is repeat what you've been saying, go take your soapbox elsewhere.

Thanks Gashauler, all I really needed was this answer. In 5 years I'll probably have my own business by then. Trucking would have been a good way to put money away for the future, which was one of the reasons I was even considering it.
