They try to get everyone home for their 34hr restart. However depending on where you live it may not be that easy. Living close to a terminal will help get you home for your reset. I live close to the Fort Recovery terminal so I get home nearly every reset. As far as the equipment, By the end of the year everyone will have a 2012 or newer truck and 95% of the trailers are 2003 or newer. There is a rider program here they are very lenient on it as long as you are in good standing you should have no problem.

How much unloading and loading is done by the driver? Are driver's at cheeseman also lumpers? Don't want to be surprised and find out I am driving 200 miles a day and spending 8 hours a day loading and unloading. Any info is appreciated!

When we do have to unload a trailer the company always pays for a lumper. But we don't haul much groceries. We haul a lot of LTL freight some of which needs nailed and blocked in to the trailer but those loads pay well for the effort. Miles are good 450 - 600 miles average with stop pays.

Lammchop - how long have you been with Cheeseman?
Running the Northeast can you generally park at shippers/consignees?
Is the Blue Cross/Shield Anthem health insurance any good and how much a pay does it cost? I understand there are different prices for different configurations - maybe you can provide an average, or what you pay. I would need family coverage.
The website states they pay Cobra coverage for 90-days, do you know if there is any catch to this - because I have heard Cobra costs nearly $1500-month!
Making a decision shortly between Cheeseman and Crete - leaning towards Cheeseman.
Thank you!Last edited: Jul 8, 2012

Geargrinder, I have been with Cheeseman for going on 5 years. Yes with our customer base it is possible to sleep at most customers, I know this because this is what I do. To be honest I don't know much about the health insurance, I am on the family HSA plan that involves at health savings account for $43 a week. But it is also required to put additional money in the account that can be used for your health expences I.E. doctor co-pays, prescriptions, ect. My wife and I just had a baby and we penciled it out that is was a little cheaper to go this route then the $143/week 80/20 plan. With the HSA plan once the high deductable is met everything is paid in full. And everything counts toward the deductable, such as doctor co-pays. I have no clue on the Cobra plan or what it consists.
As far as leaning toward Cheeseman and Crete I think you are on the right track. I do not have first hand knowledge of Crete. But I do know that by the end of 2012 every driver at Cheeseman will have a 2012 or 2013 truck!!!! I hope I could help Lammchop -
I don't know what the pay is like at Crete but you probably aren't going to get the same hometime you will with Cheeseman, unless you live somewhere that's not in one of their major freight lanes. you will find culture is much different at a carrier with 300 trucks than one with 5000. after working for a big company I like the culture at Cheeseman much better. probably my favorite part about working there is that they leave me the hell alone.
just celebrated 2 years there, planning on a 3rd, that new Prostar can't come soon enough though, Internationals don't age as gracefully as the Peterbilts I was once used to. I hope the new ones are more reliable than the old ones. reliability aside, my 2008 Prostar is very comfortable and well equipped. -
Glad to here things are still going good for you. Where you from up north??
