That's what I love about this site.
Someone comes on here complaining he can't get a break to get started in the industry because he has a record. Everyone jumps on him and says things like 'well why should they trust you with their equipment and load when you've proven you aren't honest'.
Then we talk about e-logs and everyone says it wrong that the man wants to keep them honest.
As for the original question, I've never used them and don't want to. Like the OP I have heard from a number of guys who say they really like them. They all say the onus is put on dispatch to keep the expectations realistic. -
aww come on man.we've stayed on topic for the most part!

My problem with E-log was with it changing your duty status by itself.Had several instances where I had logged onto line1 and later have a the idiot light come on telling me I had drove when I never moved and changing me to line 4.My paper logs have never done that to me. As far as running legal I do it with paper logs with no problem.

Here's the info about the 34hr resets.
(c)(1) Through June 30, 2013, any period of 7 consecutive days may end with the beginning of an off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours. After June 30, 2013, any period of 7 consecutive days may end with the beginning of an off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours that includes two periods from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.(2) Through June 30, 2013, any period of 8 consecutive days may end with the beginning of an off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours. After June 30, 2013, any period of 8 consecutive days may end with the beginning of an off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours that includes two periods from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.(d) After June 30, 2013, a driver may not take an off-duty period allowed by paragraph (c) of this section to restart the calculation of 60 hours in 7 consecutive days or 70 hours in 8 consecutive days until 168 or more consecutive hours have passed since the beginning of the last such off-duty period. When a driver takes more than one off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours within a period of 168 consecutive hours, he or she must indicate in the Remarks section of the record of duty status which such off-duty period is being used to restart the calculation of 60 hours in 7 consecutive days or 70 hours in 8 consecutive days.x#1 Thanks this. -
I must being doing something wrong...running 3200 miles a week on elogs...I sleep at truckstops (usually)...and I never drive tired. Also love the fact it figures out the split sleeper for me. I always screwed that up on paper
RBPC and joseph1135 Thank this. -
It's the same argument every time. Truckers hate elogs because they eliminate their decision to run illegally. If you ran legally, elogs wouldn't make any bit of difference over paper. The smokey and the bandit days are long gone. If you don't want to follow the rules, find another job.
peterd, NavigatorWife, LaBubba and 3 others Thank this. -
This is a topic that will never die.
Unless you have used paper and elogs, then opinions based on what you heard are useless.
I've done both and here is the basic summary.
Elogs.... No more half ### job from load planners. Plenty of rest.
Paper..... No more abuse from planners to get loads magically delivered. No more tearing out pages and running dog ### tired.
My miles haven't changed since elogs and I get plenty more sleep and relax time. Figure that one out.ladytrucker54 and peterd Thank this. -
I love how some of the "know it all" drivers here say its for lazy people. I have a feeling they aren't that bright. Here, let me hell some of the mental midgets: I used to be on paper. The company switched to electronic. Yeah, we all hated it. But, I'll be making $65,000 this year. On the e-log. I do a lot of coast to coast trips, as well as run normal 1200 mile trips. I've posted this before, and just in case you think anyone is lazy here I'll prove you wrong. Left the house in the Poconos, picked up in Allentown, PA, went to Manassas, VA. Deadhead to Strasburg, VA, picked up a 5 stop load that delivered from the LA area, to Oxnard, to Sacramento area and finaled out in Portland Oregon. 4009 miles, I had 40 minutes left on my 70 and was picking up 8 and a half hours the next day. Andi do these loads all the time. I think they are afraid. The E-log makes you work. You have to plan your day and adjust. There's no time to screw around at the truckstop.

Planning is something we always did, I just don't see how people don't have half a plan for the day or night, esp when you have to figure where you're going to park for the 10, we preferred out of the truckstops except as needed. There was only one place we stopped at in Iowa that had us leary of the car and truck that was there, you know how those bad vibe willies hit, and we hightailed it out asap.
But e-logs takes away the ability to run out of hours to do that late load for the dm.
