Appreciate hearing from anyone knowing about places that look at "newbies" for hiring. The places I have visited personally so far all want 3 to 5 years experience. Also appreciate any commentary on the owner / operator thing too as that sounds interesting to me but need to find out a lot more first.

You did not state where you are looking for work. Canada is a big country.

Welcome to the forum .... to the both of you.

Are you still in school ? If so, does that school have an OJT (on the job training) program set up with a large, local carrier ? Also, don't just jump into being a broker (owner/operator) because it looks interesting. Unless you're already a millionaire and can afford to learn the hard way, you'll bankrupt yourself very quickly. Get a company job driving a company truck. Get experience. Ask questions. Read books and trucking magazines you find on the toilet tank at the truck stop. Read forums like this and 'ask an owner/operator'. Remember, the key word in 'broker', is broke. I've been there. As a broker that is, but there were times that I had to go toe to toe over invoices from the company.

    Hope that helps

john: Sorry I cannot help as I live in the West. I have heard that Challeneger wil hire newbies. You do NOT want to be an O/O until you have at least 2 years under your belt!! Therer are lots of firms that have a complete program that will even pay for your schooling. BUT you will have to sign some sort of contract. You are getting ahead of yourself. Slow down and take it easy. Do not make a harsh move that you might regret. Good Luck. I am a newby but with perseverance I found a job and will probably start next week. Btw: Check out kijiji for jobs.

Is Travellers still in Wallacebug? Might be a place to start that's close to you. Have you spoke with the people @ Warren Gibson? Although they are based in Alliston they do have a switch yard in Chatham. Who has a yard/terminal in Sarnia besides Kriska? They would be @ the bottom of my list. Have you looked @ any local construction companies?

You can use this site http://www.quicktransportsolutions.com/carrier/canada/ontario/sarnia.php it lists piles of companies. In the beginning you will probably have to do your time at a Challenger or TransX or some big company. You may also take a look at Verspeeten or Doug Coleman, Morrice, Drive Logistics, Warren Gibson. Starting out you pretty much gotta take what you can get to get that 1 or 2 year experience. From there more and more doors open. Are you looking to go over the road or local work- home daily or seasonal work? Also there is lots of dump trucks moving in Windsor with the new bridge project, may want to look there.
Hope this helps, I live about an hour south of Sarnia.
