Great post. I just ran that same math this very week. The guy that explained it to me knew what he was saying but my ears was not picking up the signal. I pre plotted it out on my Eclipse software and nothing came up red. "The light bulb came on". An hour on duty, drive for 5.5, take a 2 hour break off duty, drive for 5.5, take an 8 hour nap, get up and drive for 5.5, take a two hour break off duty, drive for 5.5, take an 8 hour nap and on and on. When you plot this on a e-log, it will show red in till you add that "2 Hour" off duty time and then everything gets pushed forward and turns green. I will print you .txt file to pass on to other drivers as I know I could not explain it as graceful as you have. Drive safe!

60/70-Hour On-Duty Limit
May not drive after 60/70 hours on duty in 7/8 consecutive days. A driver may restart a 7/8 consecutive day period after taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty.
SO IN THE OLD DAYS YOU DROVE 8 DAY WEEK 70 HOURS THE FIRST 10 HOURS DROPPED OFF AND YOU ALWAYS HAD 10 HOURS TO DRIVE THE NEXT DAY , NOW ITS SOUNDING LIKE YOU HAVE TO TAKE 34 HOURS OFF AFTER 70 HOURS DRIVING. THIS IS CONFUSING.
I AM DRIVING A ROCK TRUCK IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY , YO YO,ING BACK AND FORTH FROM CONSTRUCTION SITE TO A DUMP SITE AND THEN GOING TO DUMP CONCRETE/ AC RECYCLE AND BRING BACK SAND. DO I HAVE TO RUN A LOG BOOK IN CALIF DOING THIS? -
