XM and SIRIUS Highlight More Support for Merger

XM Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: XMSR) and SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) today highlighted additional support the two companies have received for their pending merger. The new comments further illustrate the substantial and wide ranging benefits that the combination would offer consumers, including more programming options, lower prices and individually tailored packages. These new endorsements add to the growing list of individuals, businesses and organizations, such as the League of Rural Voters, the NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC</SPAN>) and the National Council of Women's Organizations, among others, that support the merger. Yes it is great news and I for 1 would love to cut alot of the junk programming from my sirius. Gay radio, spanish stations, religious channels, playboy channel, sports channels, classical, hip hop etc. I bet I could get by with about 20 channels or so. Give me more classic radio program stations, comedy channels, a couple more truck driver oriented channels with in house experts discussing different aspects of the biz, and maybe even a top seller book channel where you can hear an entire audio book every 2 to 4 hours. Customizing each persons selection on an ala carte system would "weed out" the junk and less popular programming real fast. A lower monthly price would be awesome too!

Sirius shareholders approve XM deal

NEW YORK - Shareholders approved a deal Tuesday to allow Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. to acquire its rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. for about $5 billion, but the largest hurdle has yet to come regulatory approval in Washington.

Shareholders of Sirius and XM had been widely expected to approve the deal, which would allow the companies to save costs on programming, acquiring subscribers and broadcasting. Shareholder advisory firms had already endorsed the deal.
More difficult will be getting the deal approved in Washington, where the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission must both give their blessing. Several consumer groups have opposed the combination, saying it would create a monopoly that could hurt consumers.
Sirius said in a statement that more than 96 percent of the shareholder votes cast approved the acquisition, while XM said 99.8 percent of its shareholders were in favor. The companies said they still hoped to complete the deal by the end of the year.
The FCC had originally said the two satellite radio companies couldn't combine, but that rule can be changed. Sirius and XM have argued that satellite radio now faces more competition for listeners since the boom in digital listening devices like Apple Inc.'s iPod, Internet radio and cell phones that can play music.
