Personally I recommend going company for at least a year, get some experience under your belt. As far as the money goes, Ask IP how much he makes as a single driver L/O, I think, and I don't want to put words in his mouth, he said at one time he was bringing in around 1100 a week. Now he also does not go home that often.
Me on the other hand makes between 800-1000 per week take home and I go home every 3-4 weeks. Of course on the weeks I go home I dont make that much, but I also dont have a lease payment hanging over my head.
Read IP's thread on leasing, take it to heart. Its tough out here and the ecomony is starting to take a slight turn down.

Aww... you can take as much hometime as you can afford. I'm spending a night at the home 20 tomorrow, and I took a week off in March, and another over the July 4th holiday. OTOH, I don't have growing kids at home any longer either. It works pretty much the same way on both sides of the fence. If you take off 4 days on the company side, you can pretty much kiss a settlement check good-bye. On the lease side, assuming that you've timed it to get enough revenue to pay the fixed costs - then go home - you can spend 3 or 4 days there, come out at the beginning of the next settlement period, and have a break-even week for the week you took home time, followed by a week with positive income. You get "pay check interruptus" either way.

The real deal you want to shoot for is having enough cash reserve to deal with income variations like that just described. If your personal weekly/monthly debt has you running from settlement check to settlement check without being able to lay money aside - and this is true whether you are a company driver or a lease operator - you will be in financial trouble eventually. There is a yearly cycle to the level of freight available, and it will catch up with us at various points in the year. Planning for it with cash set aside allows you to move through the lulls and take home time with a minimum of personal disruption. Spend all your jack as soon as it comes in, and you'll eventually be hurting.
