Hey all, I'm new and working on getting my CDL. I live in Austin, and I'm interested in getting feedback about how good or bad this area is for new drivers doing OTR. I live here only because my kids are here; I can get by living anywhere in central Texas from Temple to San Antonio. Specifically, how good is this area for inbound AND outbound runs? What types of freight predominate? I've read elsewhere that I 35 is a good location to be on, since it starts at Laredo (NAFTA related?) and runs up the center to Minn. If I end up in San Antonio, then runs on I 10 may be a possibility - is that lane any good?
My heart is set though, on running up further east in the Midwest, i.e., from down here up to KY/IN/OH. Any feedback about high volume/good-paying lanes from central TX to those states would be appreciated, too. (Please excuse me if I'm not using the jargon correctly).
Thanks!
Central Texas to Wherever

Assuming you're going to be a Co Driver.
Depends on what Co you end up with.
Seemed likee there's a lot in the Area but when I lived in Temple, I always had trouble going home and leaving. But it may have been the Company. I was with Swift at the time. -
If TMC flatbed still hires/trains new CDL holders, they'd be good to get you home weekends running TX, OK, KS, AR predominately, or you could roam and see more of the eastern half if you wanted to stay out. Knight and many others would be good too. Austin is a good area especially to get you home with flatbed (sheet rock, lumber, etc) otherwise you'll probably have to stop in while enroute South or North with a van carrier.

USA truck has a terminal in Laredo. I drove as a team, but for 3+ years we went thru Austin 4 to 6 times a week and delivered to OH, KY, IN and IL. 90 percent of the time.
