Had a very weird thing happen last Friday. I started pulling up a hill that I've done a 100 times before, and it seems like the engine is lacking power. The torque just wasn't there. I actually had to drop down another gear from what I usually pull that hill in. I looked down at the gauges and my oil and coolant temps were both running just under 250 C! My oil pressure was down to around 10 psi! Funny thing is, there are NO warning lights or buzzers going off. At this point, I'm just cresting the top of the hill and was able to find a bit of a pull-out there.
I get her off the road and shut her down. Thinking I'm going to find a God-awful mess when I open the hood. I open it up, and the water and oil levels are good, coolant is still green, oil is still black, no bubbles or foam. No discernable leaks either. Belts are still in place and tight. The fan was running during the entire pull up the hill. I call the boss, fill him in, and he suggests it's just a computer problem. Tells me to start it up again and see what it does. I fire it up again and the oil and coolant temps are back to normal. ??? Boss tells me to carry on and just keep an eye on everything.
Carry on I did, and I knew I had another big hill to climb just before my consignee. Same thing happens again. Only difference this time was the oil pressure stayed around 20-25 psi. I didn't shut it down this time, just carried on. Made it to my destination, shut it off for a bit, and the temps were normal again after the restart. Ran cool all the way home as I was empty.
I had an auto greaser line that was leaking on my right steer wheel. The shop pressure washed everything on that side of the engine, including the block, before I left. I wonder if something was affected by the water? Engine is a Cummins ISX.
Overheating, Power Loss...But No Warning Lights

Were was the last place you fueledbefore this began? Keep in mind we have three types of diesel outthere now! The one it was last tuned with is the one you should use!Jell is available in some states now, because they have tons of thestuff and the new weather patterns have changed the expected usagefor those whom speculate 5 yeas out! Bio-fuel is being mixed inbecause they have it on hand and both the market and the Federalgrants have been suspended. {Clueless}* Californians are stillpushing for Clean emit ions
and do not care about O/Os are moreconcerned about clean air than what it takes to get you load to theEast coast! * (people who do not know all engines and not build fordriving solar cars) If, you always use the same fuel I would turn thecheck for a Vacuum leak in an air line! Hope this helps THGhost -
i'd like to know how you got that engine to 250C.
cuz mine shuts off at 225F.bullhaulerswife Thanks this. -
You might pull the ECM harness plugs and check for moisture. They commonly take in water when directly sprayed.
-
Just a wild guess as I'm new to this, but have you looked at any obstruction/dirty air filter? Or excessive amount of bugs clogging the front grill?
-
You should never shut off a hot motor. Pull off the road and put on high idle with fan running. Turn off the ac. For even more efficiency crank the heater on high. At 250 you should have been boiling and losing water I would think
-
you also may want to make sure that the engine protection is turned on, that may be why it didnt shut down on you.

ECM.... bugs...?
Check your CAC and the CAC hoses for leaks.
CAC = Charge air cooler
A lack of turbo boost or should I say when loss of turbo boost cause by a leak in the Air Charge system will cause excessive heat and lack of pulling power on a hill every time. How is you fuel economy ? Do you hear any whistles ? Rushing sounds ? Doesn't matter, you can have several leaks (cracks) and never know it. I'd say this would be the first logical place to start and yes check you air filter and clean the grime out of your radiator fins too.... this will effect temp, but a leaky CAC will cause lack of power. -
Talked to the shop mechanic, and he seems to lean towards 'computer glitch' as a possible issue. They changed oil and filters on the weekend, and the truck seems to run a bit cooler now. Has a restoration of power as well. The check engine light did come on yesterday during a moderate pull up a little hill (had to drop two gears). Of course, the ambient temperature was 42C with the humidex!

Nurse it for a while, it will show you if there's other problems.
