    I'll be finishing up trucking school in a couple weeks, and I'm looking to start trucking part-time. I'd also like to be able to keep my weekend job. What I'd like to know is what type of runs I should be looking for. Just browsing on the Schneider site, and it looks like my best bet would be either intermodal, local, or dedicated, but these are just guesses. Am I on the right track? Companies will hire recent grads as part-timers, won't they?

    EDIT: I'm located in central VA, off I-81.

    I would think that is something you should ask a recruiter. Most companies seem to want to hire and train people who are going to actually benefit them. If you are only wanting to run a few miles each week, then have to be 'home' every week-end you aren't benefitting the company very much.

    Part time trucking...whats that..lol
    you might want to look at local dump bucket ready mix or go to work for a lumber yard delivering to home sites;
    all CDL class B work 10 wheel trucks NO trailer unless a local sand and gravel has a TT bucket....but then again these are mostly weather related jobs mean if the weather stinks you dont work

    I wouldn't count on a recruiter telling you the truth and 'weekends off' in trucking means anything from saturday and sunday off, to 'you'll get home saturday night, and have to leave sunday night'.

    There may be some local operations that do have a real, monday to friday operation, but you're not likely to run into one with no experience. (other than the dump trucks stuff mentioned.)

    Ok, thanks for all the help. Looks like I might be looking for a class B or C job to start off with, then maybe do some over the road in 6 months to a year, to get that experience, so I can move to part-time. That brings up a new question though. If I don't drive a big truck right after graduation, will they still hire me for OTR in a year, or will I have to take another refresher course, or something? I'm taking my CDL class at a community college.

    You will probably have to do a refresher at the very least. I went thru school with a couple of guys that had been 'out of the truck' for about a year and they were required to go back thru school, even tho their CDL was still valid.

    If you are running a log you will have to list your weekend job as line4 On Duty Not Driving.Don't know about with a local job.
