Would you recommend me to pay myself to go to a private trucking school for a 10 week course? or should I go to a free company sponsored school and work with them for at least a year to get my experience? Please give me some useful information and why you recommended me to do it.

    Thanks

if you can get a student loan, then go to a private school.

if you cannot get a student loan. then go to a company school.

this pretty much sums" it up.

I say go to a JC or a private school...you'll likely get more hands on experience and wheel time than the CDL factories...Sure, at the end it will be a little more difficult to get a job because YOU will have to go look for companies to apply to, but I think it's well worth it. In hindsight, I lucked out and did well at my BFI company, but a lot of people don't make the contract time and end up having to pay for the entire cost of the school, as well as getting a bad mark on their DAC....generally because of poor training.

so is going to a private trucking school is far more beneficial when trying to find a job as a rookie? I am considering Great Lakes Truck Driving School in Northern Ohio if any of your are familiar of it.... anyways they say this... this was all just copied and pasted right from their website btw.....

    Here is the link..
    http://greatlakestds.com/placement-assistance.shtml

    • A thorough assessment during the entrance interview to help determine if the prospective student is in a good position to gain employment upon graduation.
    • Placement activities beginning the first week of training.
    • Numerous in-class presentations on topics such as interviewing, hiring criteria, filling out applications, etc.
    • The scheduling of multiple recruiters, from companies that are hiring, to make presentations to the students, speak one-on-one with them, and provide applications for employment.
    • Minimum of 5 mandatory appointments for each student with the placement department.
    • Provide students with a number of applications and assistance with completing them and with follow up.
    • A job-order log is kept which details current hiring opportunities, enabling the students to better locate a particular job that interests them
    • Employment workshops held regularly for graduates. During this time, students will be refreshed on interview and applications skills, and will be presented with new employment options and application assistance.
    • Job Fairs are held on our property and are open to current students, as well as graduates.
    • An online-job board is maintained for graduates to search additional employment opportunities.

Does this seem legitimate to you? I am just trying to make the best decisions and came on here to get some advice from some experienced drivers...

I didn't click the link.....but from what you posted, all I see are things about job placement. Who cares about that right now, you need to LEARN how to drive first...what kind of classroom/in truck experience do they offer? Does it say on the site?
