    I have a Cobra Power Inverter that has 2 Positive Inputs and 2 Negative Inputs and a Ground Stud coming off the chassis. I have one Positive hooked up to the battery bank and the negative run to the frame of my truck. Could this be the reason why I have some noise coming through my CB radio? Do I need to hook up to both positives and both negatives to the battery and the stud on the chassis of the inverter to the frame of my truck? The instructions say use both hookups but it seems strange. Just a thought.

    L) My inverter creates lots of interference on my CB radio.
    Answer:

    Sometimes a power inverter can cause interference on a CB radio. This is because power inverters contain oscillators, which can leak interference.

    To minimize interference:

    * Keep the inverter and inverter cables (both the battery cables and the AC cables) as far as possible from the CB and CB cables.

    * Connect a #12 wire from the ground lug on the inverter to the chassis of the vehicle. Keep the wire as short as possible.

    * If there is still interference, then unplug everything from the inverter and leave the inverter turned on. If you no longer get interference, then an AC line filter should help. Tripp-Lite ULTRABLOK428 is recommended. This filter plugs directly into the outlet on the inverter. DO NOT use an extension cord between the filter and the inverter, plug the filter directly into the inverter. If desired, a power strip can then be plugged into the filter.

    * As a last resort, try connecting a #12 wire from the chassis of each appliance to the chassis of the vehicle. Keep each wire as short as possible.

    This sparks my interest, no pun intended, since when I unplug the power strip, my noise goes away. I didn't know they made an AC filter, I thought it was only DC stuff that had noise suppressors available.

    Hey!
    I was just fixin to start a thread to ask somebody about this inverter thing. It looks like I am going to have to hook up my own.
    Gazoo, did you just follow the instructions or did you go to a shop and talk to someone first. Is there anything I need to be aware of or concerned about? I have heard of trucks catching on fire. Would that be because it wasn't grounded properly or what.

    Also, this had to be a temporary set up. I need to be able to easily remove it. Can that be done? And, I suppose the plugins are on the inverter. So I would have to run a thickly gauged extention cord into the truck, yeah? Is there a way to do that without drilling holes, yet still be safe (not having to roll down the window to run the cord in).

    A good number of trucks that have had fires related to inverters were caused by using a too small inverter (250-400 watts) and plugging them into a 12v "accessory" plug instead of wiring them directly. Also a good many might have been caused because the inverter wasn't allowed to "breathe".

    That figures. Swift won't allow us to use inverters unless they are the ones like you just mentioned (250-400 plugin accessory type). Then I hear about peoples plugin melting just trying to use a 12v cooler. Seems like they are trying to force me into the exact thing I was trying to avoid.

    Gazoo... I had my inverter fry my fridge....and the inverter. Luckily, the Tri-Pak unit it was installed with was still under warranty so Thermo-King replaced the inverter. I talked with the manufacturer of the inverter and they told me not to use a Surge Protector because it COULD interpret the fluctuations of the Cine Wave inverter as a surge and send it back to the inverter.....voiding the warranty and killing it in the process.

    Also, on the larger inverters, I read that if you only use one wire...you won't get the full power rating of the inverter.

    As a follow up, I talked to the very nice folks at Cobra about 30 minutes ago. She told me that the dual hook ups are NOT a requirement. If I am not running a microwave then I only need to hook up one set of power inputs. HOWEVER, I told her I AM running a microwave but it is only a 700 watt unit. She said I still would not need to hook up both inputs. I asked her if there was any less of a power output using just one set of inputs and she said no. If there is a heavy load, IE 1500 watt microwave, than the additional inputs would be necessary. Also, they are there for trucks that have more than one battery bank in two separate locations. She said that many times a trucker wants to hook up the inverter to both battery banks and this allows them to do so.

    Are you guys using a pure sine wave inverter or a modified sine wave inverter? Anyone used both and noticed a difference?
