Why aren't truckers in the driver's seat?

I honestly do want a hood truck, I'm working toward a w9. Thought the w9 I want has a 280" wheelbase. I figure I'll get used to it.

I think long nose trucks are most of the time nice looking trucks. The first one I was in was massive and felt like I was climbing on a horse. Id need some extra steps to climb into one.

Its all good. I feel like a kid climbing into one too. I'm 5'7" so not much taller than you haha. I know how you feel.

That was some great info. I only have 1 credit card which is linked to my savings because it's a secured credit card. But I hardly carry cash but you are dead on when you say there's something about paying cash that makes buying things more real. Sometimes when i'm in a store and may want to buy something even if I have the cash i'll be tempted to use to my debit card. But if I feel the need to use my debit card so it won't seem like i'm spending money i'll leave whatever it is in the store. It took me a very long time to this point and to get some discipline. Plus I guess I was at a point where I made a decent of money and had nothing to show for it and was in a bit of debt. It was a very hard lesson learned in a very hard way. But it set me straight and I learned from it.

One problem most people have in our so called modern society is that most are not willing to save for what they want. They would rather put themselves in debt rather than wait until they saved enough to pay cash. If you can't afford to pay cash then you can't afford to buy it. I was glad to see Kmart advertising that they now have layaway. That is how most people paid for Christmas when I grew up, if it was for items that they didn't have the cash. You pay something down to hold the item and then so much a week or month until the product is paid for and only then can you take it home. There are no bills. It is sort of like you charged it except that you usually don't pay any interest and don't get the product until it is completely paid for. No bills. No high credit card interest.

Nearly everyone can live on less than we think. There many things that we consider necessities that we don't really need. Children don't need their own cell phone. We managed to get along just fine using a regular phone or walking over to our friends to have a really conversation. Internet or cable are not necessities. We did OK with antenna TV and knew nothing about the internet or computers. Besides who really needs or wants 500 TV channels? Saving today will pay dividends ten fold in the future. If you have heavy debt then you are a slave to your creditors. If you become a saver rather than a spender you will get along much better than those who think that they must be in debt and have everything that they want right now. When the economy takes a nose dive a saver can survive while a spender may need to file bankruptcy.

 

Ok I might be getting a little nit picky but I have to ask. So called modern society? You say that as though you feel the belief that we live in a modern world is false. Why would anyone say that? People live longer and are healthier than they've ever been before. Cars are safer than they've ever been before. More of the population has easy access to more and better forms of communication than they've ever had before. I don't know if you're just going for shock value or what with that comment but your posts are usually very well reasoned and very well written so I guess that comment just stood out as being unusual to me.

Since I'm picking nits, here's a few more.

I'm going to agree with the gist of what you're saying, but not this. This is really a hypocritical statement when you get right down to it. We got along fine with a regular phone when we were kids. But a regular phone is all that was available when we were kids. And when you get right down to it, a regular phone was also available when most of our parents were kids and yet most of our parents did not have one in the house when they were kids. So essentially you're saying that our kids should be content to live by the standards of yesteryear even though we didn't have to do the same when we were their age. That doesn't fly. Living beyond your means in one thing. But your statement seems to suggest that we should consider it frivolous or wrong if we want our kids to enjoy a better standard of living than we had growing up. It is not abnormal or decadent to want to give your children a better standard of living. I agree with your points about not living beyond your means and I strive to do so myself. But I don't fault anyone for wanting to give their kids a better standard of living. If you can't do it, you can't do it. But its never wrong to want to do it.

I do. No one needs them. But I'm not ashamed to admit I want them and enjoy having them.

 

Same here. I may not watch all 500 but the good ones (well my favorites) usually aren't on the basic packages.

Not to be too picky as well but....

Actually, your presumptions are incorrect. People are not healthier that they have been before. Why is it that the medical industry not only survives during a recession/depression but actually blossoms? People today are not living healthier lives but rather are sicker than ever and modern medicine is the "savior" that comes and gives you a pill to solve everything!

Actually the real question should be.... Is the standard of living that people go by today BETTER than it was many years ago? Are people really happier because they have Nintendo, Cable TV, Cell Phones, Internet, iPads and more? The real question is... are we truly benefited as a society because people are glued to their cell phone "texting" someone rather than speaking with people face to face? Has there really been a major advantage to the betterness of society? All I see everywhere is people glued to gadgets NOT INTERACTING with others and separating themselves from the world around them. Preferring to be absorbed in an electronic device.

I think G/Man hit it right on the head. All of these extra things that people take for granted today, are really that. EXTRA and are not really necessary. In fact... not really beneficial.
