Looking to replace part of the fleet.

    Our company is looking to replace part of our aging fleet with some new trucks. We are leaning towards the new volvo's D13 with the I-shift. It would be either those or possibly freightliner running the ISX.

    I have looked at some of the new Volvos. How are they as far as reliability is concerned. I have experience with the '06 D12. We have been happy with those. The usual EGR, EGR cooler problems. Also the EPG failures. But other than that they are a solid truck.

    Does anyone have experience with volvos newest aftertreament system? How are they heating up the DPF? Are they using a dosing nozzle similiar to the failed International/Cat system or do they utilize delayed late fuel timing like the Cummins?

    Any problems with the DEF systems. This will be our first to add tot the fleet that utilize the DEF.

    ouh, DEF, DPF pain bad on any truck. Usual DEF problems of Volvo are low pressure (worn ore clogged SCR pump, intake), broken DEF line heaters, clogged catalistic converter (usually with DEF made with demineralized water).

    It is not all, early D13 got problems with cyl/ head, solved in 2010. Newer got any head issue after 2010. Injectors are twin valve by Delphi, like on late series 60 and Cummis ISM. relativelly reliable.

    New Engine got very thin wires, so if you use truck on bad roads - keep electric band in truck) LOL

    I-shift is a good tranny, but there is big difference with for example Mercedes tranny. If something fails - no redundancy things, truck stops on road and you cant limp home slow, like Mercedes, you have to call tow truck.

    One more problem - new disk brakes. They are better the first generation of disl brakes, but be ready do change calipers and craked disks. But safety level of new brake system is very good. Brakes are better average car brakes

    Why not consider looking at the DD15 instead of the ISX? People seem to have way better luck with those.

    I vote for ISX. Becouse there are DEF/DPF solutions for ISX, but not for DD15

    A downstream fuek dosing system for Active DPF regeneration is far superior to the late injection systems. The main issue with late injection systems is oil dilution. Cylinder wash is a bit of a concern to some.


    The SCR systems themselves are having typical early production issues while they work out bugs and fine tune the systems. Overall these engines are the best running most efficient engines since emissions equipment started being added.

    The corrosive properties of DEF as well as the freezing issues are the main reasons for the expensive materials needed for the parts as well as some of the initial issues their running into.

    They are available but not required, I still haven't driven one with disc brakes even on the steering axle, but every new truck seems to have better brakes than the one I just got out of did.

    Volvo use Knorr EBS. I'd say it is not good enought. Wabco Truck EBS is really reliable thing, but Volvo use Knorr/Bendix brake system only
