Not No To Jb Hunt, Hell No!!!

Are you a recruiter? They said that they didn't want anyone that collected unemployment. Right now, I have numerous companies contacting me, so yes, they are banging my doors down. I'm a million miler with no tickets ever, no accidents ever, no felonies or misdemeanors ever and in perfect health with no medications whatsoever at any time in my life. I didn't know that the Craigslist ad was JB Hunt because there is no way on earth that I would ever work for such a snake of a company. The ad never specified what company it was and I can understand why. Nobody would apply. Somebody who worked for JB Hunt told me that he drove for them for for 2 years. One day, he was told that he would have to go into their lease program or he would be terminated. The driver was foolish enough to do it and said it was the worst experience of his life. He said that his paychecks were 10 dollars a week, average. Some weeks, the company demanded a payment from him, claiming that his pay went into the negative. He said that he had to beg other truckers at truckstops for money so that he could eat. He lost his car, his apartment and his girlfriend because he was flat broke. He quit and JB Hunt sent him a $20,000 bill for the remainder of the lease. The refusal to hire anybody that ever collected unemployment is proof positive that this company doesn't believe in layoffs. The company philosophy must be a falsified, muddied DAC and termination under false pretenses instead. It doesn't matter how long one collects unemployment, whether 2 months or 2 years. Collecting unemployment should not be a criteria for any normal company to base its employment decisions on. I have to do some research and see if this is an illegal practice. Just to let you know, Mr. Recruiter or Mr. Dispatcher or Mr. HR that wrote the above reply.

Honestly tho, I found my current JB job on craigslist. I was a little on the fence when I found out it was J.B. Hunt as well. But it was a local gig so sometimes you have to man up and do what you gotta do to pay them bills. I now work Monday through Friday with some Saturday work in certain seasons. I usually gross over a grand and get to see my family daily. Best decision I have made so far. Is the job perfect? Nope. But none are, you just gotta look around and find one that fits your lifestyle. There are many guys at my terminal that hate it there, some quit and some come back. To each his own. Another thing I like about it here is the opportunity to go to another account if I want to. This way my tenure stays the same and I get to keep my health benefits and vacation time.

Be careful with JB Hunt. Theres a supermarket chain that uses JB Hunt for local deliveries to their stores. The furthest market from their facility is about 50 miles. They are ripping these drivers off blind. Instead of paying these drivers by the hour due to the short distances, they are paying them by the mile and by the stop instead! The average driver only makes $350 per week and hitting $500 is rare for them. To top it off, they have to load and unload their own trucks. Everyone in this area laughs at them and say that these guys must live in 2 income households in order to drive for them. I noticed that these particular local drivers are are on dopey side.

 

Uhhhh..... yeah, right. $350 a week.

I mean if you're going to make up stories or repeat urban legends ya think you could make them just a little more believable? So what you are claiming is that there are company drivers that earn $350 a week working full time? Personally I work around 60 hrs a week but let's just say at 50 hours a week you claim that company drivers are averaging $7 an hour?

I do work for JB Hunt and have for over 4 years now. Currently I work Monday through Friday, home every night and gross between $1050 and $1150 a week. If I volunteer to work Saturday I am between $1300 and $1500 a week.(weekend shifts and nightshift guys usually make more) I realize that this does not hold true for everyone and because I have 4 years in I am at a higher per mile rate than new drivers hired off the street.

Your work ethic also plays a huge part also. One of my co-workers earned $75k doing the same job I do. I realize I won't hit that cause frankly I don't want to sacrifice my life to that extent for $ at this stage of my life. 60 hours is plenty and I often turn down a lot of work because $55-60k is enough for me to get by and I enjoy having both Saturday and Sunday off and only work a 6th day once in a while. There are other guys that work the bare minimum and only put in 45-50 hrs a week and might only gross 43-47k a year. We all have our obligations and our priorities.

JB has many different driving jobs. There are many, many dedicated driving jobs for a variety of customers. Some dryvan, some tanker, bulk tanker as well as flatbed and reefer. Of course JBHT is the largest provider of intermodal freight by a large margin so there are many regional and local intermodal driving jobs as well. I look at JB Hunt as a large umbrella company comprised of hundreds of smaller companies. Each location, DCS account and division has its own pay structure and account specific policies.

As a whole JB pays better than average, offers better than average benefits and operates better than average equipment. They also consistently have some of the highest CSA scores among all large company truckload carriers. Yeah, you might get on an account and have a bad fleet manager. Like all of trucking crap is gonna hit the fan and from time to time and you may feel like you're getting the shaft, but all in all there are many opportunities to do well here provided you abide strictly to their policies, are committed to safety and don't bring a bunch of personal baggage to the workplace. I say you get in the door where you can, do a good job even if that means making some sacrifices and if you don't like it, check the JB job board, talk to other drivers and put in for a transfer within the company for something else without losing benefits or seniority.
By and large most of the vitriol and hatred spewed towards JBHT is from disgruntled misfits that were fired due to their own negligence or inability to adhere to safety protocol so they fabricate or embellish stories as their own personal vendetta. In the end you got to make up your own mind and live with the consequences. I made mine 4 years ago and I can tell you I could have done a lot worse.

 

I went in a little early to keep ahead of the worst part of the storm. Dispatch told me that the VP of operations ( Northeast Div ) sent an email wanting all drivers off the roads by 11am Monday. Bravo JB for putting safety ahead of profit. I did a short run with a backhaul. 200 miles for the day so not good but drinking coffee at home with the family now and praying the power doesn't go out. Better safe at home than sorry somewhere else.

BTW- I'm over 50 gross for the year already with 2 months to go

Tuesday was a wash. I didn't go in and heard there was no power at the DC anyway. My house lost power for 3 days. I feel blessed considering other areas that were hit. I was in NY and North Jersey on Thursday. What a madhouse. Lines for Gas going on for miles with police to keep watch. Total craziness.


Anyway, we have tons of emergency loads now so I worked today to make up for Tuesday. We should be pulling emergency loads for the near future so my account should not be slow until year's end.

 

beware of jb hunt. they are downsizing the fleet, cutting almost in half from what i understand. lots of people waiting on tractors. ofcourse jb hunt does not care about any driver. also, beware of this....if you were recruited by a jb hunt rep, just know that they DO NOT DO THEIR OWN RECRUITING. they use a third party telemarketing company do all of their recruiting for them. please know that you will not be happy working for jb hunt. i can swear by this.
