One year experience to drive for Landstar?

They are pretty firm but it don't hurt to call and ask. There is some better companies out there then Landstar friend. Look around don't rush it. I'm with Landstar and it's really really really hard right now, the agents keeping posting garbage freight rates it's getting harder each week with them. I'm actually considering looking to lease some where else. It's not as great driving the big blue star like everyone thinks it is.

 

I had always thought they are two years and one year as OO. But have seen new OOs leasing. Less than a year driving and jumping to OO is asking a lot.

 

They are firm On the experience. If you are wanting to make a quick move then they wont work for you. Typically it will take weeks to get on with them. Like the other Op said there are "better" companies out there That is a matter of opinion. In my opinion I will never work for another carieer, THat is my choice. That being said the following are the MINIMUM standards listed on the lease2landstar.com application site :

• Owner Operator Minimum Requirements
• Must be at least 23 years of age
• Class A (or Class B for Expedited) CDL with HazMat (H) or combination (X) endorsement.
• No more than two at-fault accidents and two motor vehicle violations within the previous 36 months, or no more than one at-fault accident and three motor vehicle violations during the previous 36 months. No involvement in a preventable DOT recordable accident in the past 12 months.
• Operators must have one year (six months for Expedited) of verifiable over-the-road driving (including snow and ice) within the past three years or three years verifiable experience in the last 10 years, of which six months must be within the previous 48 months, with a Class A (or Class B for Expedited) CDL using the type of equipment similar to what you will be operating at Landstar.
• No felony convictions within the past 7 years. All other felony and misdemeanor charges are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• No positive drug or alcohol test including refusals and pre-employment results.
• No suspensions of more than 30 days for moving violations in the last 36 months.
• No more than one serious violation as defined on Table 2 of section 383.51 of the FMCSR handbook within the previous 36 months prior to qualification.
• No railroad-highway grade crossing offenses as defined on Table 3 of section 383.51 of the FMCSR handbook within the previous 36 months prior to qualification.
• No citations or convictions for Reckless Driving or Careless Endangerment during the 36 month period prior to the order date of the MVR.
• No DUI charges during the 60 month period prior to the order date of the MVR in a personal or non-commercial vehicle and never in a commercial vehicle.
• Proficient enough in English to understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, make entries on reports and records, and converse with the public.
• Provide and maintain proper levels and types of approved insurance during your lease with Landstar including:
  • Unladen Liability and Occupational Accident coverage or, in some cases, statutory Workers' Compensation coverage are mandatory. If you do not participate in the Unladen Liability and/or CPP (Occupational Accident insurance) programs, you must show comparable Unladen Liability coverage and/or Occupational Accident coverage through acceptable insurance carriers.
  • If statutory Workers' Compensation coverage is required and you do not participate in the fleet workers' compensation plan (FWCP) program, coverage must be provided by licensed carriers with acceptable interstate coverage.
• These are minimum operator qualification standards subject to DOT requirements, and Landstar may impose more stringent requirements at its option. The decision whether to qualify an operator will be made by Landstar in its sole discretion and on a case-by-case basis.

Also if you are one of those anti Qualcom cowboys then you will not want to lease there. As of August 1 2012 all new leasees will be required to have a EOBR/qualcom installed in their truck. The only upside to that is they will loan you one for the duration of your lease, and pay for the installation.

 

LS is tough with their standards, period.

 

Tough with their standards and for good reason. We have an industry leading safety record we're trying hard to maintain. Unfortunately, even CSA is getting us. Not sure about Allaby's case but many of the guys I know love it here and would go nowhere else, despite all the downfalls and things people feel are wrong.

 

Not trying to troll here but I am actually very surprised at these requirements. I thought they where tougher and believe that they are tough. What I am saying is that these are MINIMUM standards. Doesn't mean that you will still get hired you if you meet these. And likely you won't. It just gives them a little wiggle room if applicants are down and to get people they won't accept to apply.

Being someone that evaluates applicants, these standards are guidelines. But I firmly believe that LS safety record plays out in both the soft side of hiring and training. The safety rep from our insurance company when in IL came from the group that does the checking for LS and he showed me a couple things about reading between the lines. It is an art not a science and LS seems to have the record to say they are truly artists in this area.

 

Don't get me wrong i love it here @ landstar i just don't live in a great area for good paying freight so it's kinda hard to stay consistent. It is what it is, i have had some really good weeks here and some really bad weeks like the last 3 weeks have been not so good for me, but something always pops up last minute to save my ###.
