Hi all. I am living in SW Florida and supposed to get a bus ticket to got to Cedar Rapids IA from CRST in a few weeks. Looking to get into driving as a second career. I'm going to be 52 by the time I get to CDL school. I have read a lot of people saying things about CRST, and I know their pay is not the best, but they are the only company sponsered school that will take me out of where I live. So I am going to give it my best.
I've been in Land Surveying most of my life, and there is just none of that work around down here. I have been married for 32 years, kids are grown. I have traveled a lot in my life, and have driven over a good portion of the US. Back in 2003 I spent 6 weeks driving from SW Florida to Oregon and back, and I camped along the way most of the time, so the idea of living out of a sleeper cab does not bother me. I am also a natural night owl. I am hoping once I get through training that will help me with team driving, because I will be happy to drive at night.
Anyhow, here I am. I have been lurking a week or so before posting, just getting the lay of the land. Hope to run into some of you folks out on the road.

Welcome aboard Troubador....Good luck in your second career and be safe out there.

If CRST is the only company hiring from your area, then go for it. I've hauled a lot of produce out of the everglades area and orange juice out of the Interstate 4 corridor. Once you get experience many more opportunities will become available to you. Best wishes.

Luck and blessings to ya' Troubador. If you are given a chance to volunteer for the Hawkeye training, jump on it. You'll enjoy the experience...
