I am in the process of acquiring a CDL for the second time after a five year break to go to college and get a degree......got the degree but cant find a job now. So back to trucking I go. Today I found Heartland Express refresher course drivers, which from the basic statement on their website states that they take drivers who have been out of the seat for awhile. The website does not give much information on the resuirements or anything.

Im curious if anyone else knows about this? Better yet has anyone gone through this? Im trying to avoid the Swifts, Werners and the other huge companies. I realize that I am essentially a new graduate in the eyes of most companies because it has been 5 years. Just trying to shop around and see what other options I have. Thanks in advance for any input. Feel free to share any suggestions on any other companies that will hire someone that has been out of the truck for a bit.

Your best bet is to call any company you're interested in and ask what they require to get back in the drivers seat. Many on this forum say they were told to complete CDL school, that a refresher would not be enough. Lots of changes in the 5 years you've been out of this.

It is nearly a given that without the magic "x months within 3 years" issue that the insurance industry created, some team driving with a mentor or trainer will absolutely be required.
"Some team driving" meaning at the very minimum, two weeks in teams, unless you can happen to find a carrier who is self insured, and after some research with a buddy and his connection to the FHWA, no list of the self insured carriers is readily available.

I have 15 years full time tractor trailer experience, but all prior to 2007.
I have one month experience 11/12 to 12/12 hauling 28' doubles full time for UPS package, as a holiday seasonal driver.
(UPS is self insured and so can ignore the insurance industry's "x months in 36 months" collusive mandate.)

Anywho - I start with Heartland on 02/04/13. It is strongly suggested that I will only be required to team up for two weeks before I go solo.

Many carriers want 8 weeks in teams for guys like me. I respect and admire those who run teams, but don't think it's for me any longer than two weeks tops.
I hope it doesn't go there...

I discovered a vast variety of requirements among carriers for folks like us out of the saddle for over three years. Like Chinatown posted, you'll have to call the companies.

Prime inc is self insured but you will have to go out with a trainer for 40-60k miles depending on which division you go in. give Angela Gomez a call at 8002244585 she is an honest recruiter and will answer your questions.

Major typo in my post above -- I'm going to Western Express, not Heartland Express.
