I would use your post 911 GI bill and go to school for yourself. Once in school find a company that you want to work for and see if while you are with a trainer they will consider you an apprentice. If they will do that you can extend the post 911 bill and get your bah for the duration of that. This will provide you will the bah for an E-5 with dependents of the area which your main terminal is located in. Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids has a good program to go to. IMHO this is what i would do and not tie myself to a company for x amount of time if i don't like them.

    Redex Thanks this.

From one vet to another, go private. That is what I did. My VA paid for my schooling and I had more options after I graduated. I also landed a local job.

If you go any where other than the company you go to school for, they are going to want you to go to their "refresher course" any where from a couple days to a week and then go with one of their trainers for a week or two. Nobody says you cant pay for a "company school" up front and then you dont have to owe your soul to them. Any school worth going to, you can use the GI bill even the "company schools". As far as the community college, I dont know where ya all are from but if you have less than 2 or 3 years otr they throw out your app. so I'm not sure if I would want to go that route and pay for school and then not be able to get a job. I think you would be better off to go to the company you want to work for. I made the mistake of seeing the greener grass on the other side of the fence, and I quit with less than 1 year otr. I have class A,B,C,D,M with doubles triples tanker and hazmat, and I cant get a job driving a class B box truck, so I'm not sure I would put my future in hopeing for placement after school

I went down to an info session and talked to one of the instructors today, I was impressed with the facilities/equipment and the instructor I met. He was able to answer all of my questions.

Now I just need to speak to the VA and see if I have enough GI Bill left to cover the course, and possibly apprenticeship. I used a good portion of my benefits pursuing a degree. I will finish someday... :biggrin_2559:

Thanks again for the help everyone!

Business Admin, my major was information systems. I was doing well until I moved to be closer family, I couldn't hack the terrible schedule and commute. I was barely able to sleep. I've never been able to have a good schedule going to campus so I'm going to finish online.

About 2 1/2 years. It was a kick in the gut to leave, but I think I was doing it the hard way. Having to trudge to campus and cram into he lecture halls with 18-20 year old kids got old after a while.

I'm hoping I can maybe squeeze in some online classes once I get settled into a job and a routine.
