I live in Oregon, I went to a local truck driving school near me called IITR. The school was about 4 weeks I remember and to graduate the school you had to get all your endorsements on your CDL. So I currently hold a Oregon Class A CDL with tanker, hazmat and doubles-triples. Also long story short, I have my TWIC card too.

I got hired on as a company driver with no-experience with a OTR company based here in Oregon and I pull Refer and Dry Vans in 48 states. I've been driving about 10 months now and I'm already sick of living in this box, I go on the road for 6-8 weeks at a time and getting routed back home is near impossible.

I've driven in all kinds of weather, snow, ice, rain and ect. and all kinds of traffic. And I've had to chain up a couple of times in the last few months.

I'm a single guy 40 years old, divorced and no kids, and to save money I live in my truck full time. I don't even have an apartment or pay rent, but I'm sick of it already.

I've contacted Schneider already and even applied for a few of the oil field jobs in Texas. But when I talk to the recruiters on the phone they are telling me I have to live in Texas and have a Texas address/Texas CDL before I can get an interview with them.

I really want to complete my year OTR before I quit my current company, but also I don't want to just quit and move to Texas with out having a job lined up first.

    Comments, suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Company OTR driver 48 states

Hey Uncle Ben. If you come out here to the Permian you most likely will have a job in 48 hrs or less. Everybody is hiring here.

Stick out the next 2 months get that 1st year of experience with one company. If the company your with paid for, or reimbursed the cost of your school you may have a 1 or 2 year commitment. You need to check you don't want them telling a prospective employer your not eligible for rehire. Besides you never know you might want to go back there some day it's never a good idea to burn bridges. There's lots of work in the oil field. You need to figure out what you want to do haul water, haul crude you need hazmat for crude and acid tube They pay by the hour mostly, or haul frac sand, pipe or cement, pull an acid tube. Frac sand pays mostly percent of the gross although some do pay hourly. Don't know much about pipe so you've got choices do some research talk to people that do it. I've hauled Frac Sand for the last 6 years so I'm more familiar with that. You don't have to come all the way to Texas there's work in Wyoming,Montana,Colorado,North Dakota,Kansas,Utah,Oklahoma,Ohio,New Mexico and other states east you got plenty of choices. If you plan to live where you work you'll have to get a license in that state. That's no big deal just trade yours for theirs in most cases you don't even have to take a written test. Good luck if you want a regular schedule water or crude will be your best bet.

    Thanks Hollywood Tom,

My plan is to stick it out with my current company and log my 1 year OTR with them, then start looking. I'm looking at water truck/vacuum truck jobs in Texas because I really like the Corpus Christi/Gulf area. I would not mind working inland, but I would like to be able to at least get to the coast on the my days off.

As I stated in my first post I have my CDL Class A w/ tanker, hazmat and double-triple endorsement but I'm not using those endorsements in my current job and I've had a TWIC card for about 4-5 years now. I'm just tired of living on the road and in my truck, I'd like to put some roots down before I turn 50.

    Thanks again Hollywood Tom...

    hey rocdoc,
i just earned my CDL a few weeks ago and i am currently enrolled in a tankers class to learn more about tankers and waiting for my hazmat. i have the tankers n doubles/trips endo. i am talking to an OTR recruiter frm schneider but honestly id rather not do OTR instead i'd like to wrk in the oil fields. i did look on the schneider's website and they want a minimum of 6months experience for oil field jobs. i am willing to relocate. my recruiter has no info on any oil field jobs. your posts encouaged me alot to find consistent wrk in the oil field. so i was wondering if you have anymore info for me as far as getting hired in the oil field with no "official driving experience for an established company"?
    thank you

I'm still feeling out the area, strictly online at the moment since I live in Chicago, but my wife and I will be moving to Lubbock within the next 6 months. I have 7 years driving experiance, my first six months was reefer/van, then 2 years flatbed, and the past 5 years hauling mail locally here. Before I move I plan on taking and getting my tanker/hazmat endorsements. Anything like this in that area?

I sure would like to relocate to west texas...somewhere near Pecos and Van Horn and drive tankers in the oilfield for Schneider. I am currently with Schneider Dedicated and run the Costco account routes to El Paso and Pharr. I have my haz/mat and tanker endorsements and have about 1.5 yrs exp. Whom would I contact to get the ball rolling.
