I have one foot in the old school generation. I am going to give my employer an honest day's work and make sure I earn my pay. That being said, I'm not stupid either. I am getting paid so much per trip and my employer says 'why should I pay by the hour when a trip that I can do in 3 hours takes another guy 5 hours'. Ok, I suppose there are lazy drivers who would take advantage of an hourly rate but that's not me. I just started calculating how many hours I am on duty and not getting paid. There are just times that 3 hour trip is going to take 4 hours because of loading delays, traffic, weather, etc. I now record those hours on my weekly trip sheet and add an 'FYI'....while I look for another job.

Just so you know, if your boss did decide to base his pay scale on an hourly rate, you'd probably see a pay cut from what you currently receive. Any reworked pay schedule is going to favor the boss...there is no reason to change if it isn't going to benefit him. The pay rate will likely be based upon the revenues generated by some of the least productive employees...because he isn't going to give them a raise until they prove they are capable of increasing their own productivity. So, if you are one of the top producers, you're going to see a cut in your pay because he doesn't want to have to listen to people complain about how much more you are making per hour than they are when they have more seniority/experience/etc. You can make the same percentage as another driver and earn more because you do more. You can make the same per mile and earn more because you do more. When paid by the hour, though, you have no opportunity to earn more by doing more...only by working longer hours. If you complete the run in less time, you earn less than the guy who takes longer to complete the same run. To me, THAT isn't fair.

I prefer hourly,I get 36.20 per hr. driving a semi end dump.I work for a small excavating co.Any time over 8 hrs. or 40 hrs. is time and half, saturday automatically time and half. I use to own my own truck for 8 yrs. doing same line of work got paid hourly, by the load, or by the ton.I always prefer getting paid by the hour so you did'nt have to drive like a maniac and beat your equipment or take a chance in a speeding ticket or getting into an accident and killing someone.

You are making some great money! Year round work, or seasonal? Regardless, that is a great wage, with some great OT!
