Like it or not, this isn't a company thing.. this is on the fast track to being and industry thing.. if your big.. you better get ready to do a sleep apnea or sleep study if your BMI is out of range and I myself are one of those "lucky" people to be large.. and it was also what I got sick of in the military.. if you are 6'2.. 300 pounds is just not healthy and people (and the industry) are just starting to get that as a factor for qualifying people they want to take the risks of hiring on. Bigger people have lots of smaller incidents than their lighter counterparts.. ankles, knees etc are pretty common injuries for larger drivers.. they are also almost all in the BP / Diabetes risk range where the companies have to fork out money more often for physicals (every year rather than two).. the sleep apnea thing is a one time gig as of now, if you take the physical and you get refused until you have a sleep assessment done, then get the assessment done. If you pass, then its over.. if you fail. it was money well spent, you cant get treated and maybe feel better...
This isn't going to go away.. the BMI is horse manure as far as I'm concerned.. even after some month long survival schools in the military, I would have still be considered almost "obese" at 215 pounds and I was a running animal at the time and maxed PT tests etc etc.. If you are planning in getting into the industry YES.. your weight as size will at sometime come into play..
Don't let it stop you from getting into an industry..
Are bigger guys given a harder time?

My med card comes up in three years. I can kick thru a brick wall, my legs are large, always have been. At 211 I'm obease, I don't think so Scooter. I can throw a 75 lb tarp 8 feet in the air. What is Doctor going to say about that?

Wait a minute, I'm retired! You Kids bring it to me Sorry sometimes I forget.

My friend weighs 300 + and is about 6'3" and passes the DOT physical.
He takes Metformin, Diovan and uses the sleep apnea machine.
He has tanker/hazmat, passport, TWIC and pulls tanker 48 states & Canada.
So, that's my answer to your concerns. Yes, you can make a good living trucking & would probably enjoy flatbed or tanker the most.Redex Thanks this. -
I want some Idaho potatoes, some corn your choice of state, & a steak from North Texas. I want it here by mid afternoon. Oh Some Calif wine. Go get it. Truckers are abused used, mis treated. Low wages, but the heart of this nation. Without Us, America stops.

That seems to be the direction the industry is heading. Not for me. Time to start from square one again! -
I'm 5'9 and roughly 240-250. I got my DOT card before I started trucking school. I didnt make much further after that. However, Ive seen multiple big guys (6'3, 325 easily) pass and do it.
Good luck! -
I experienced the exact same thing in the military at the end of my career. Funny they thought was out of shape because a piece of paper and a tape told them so (no problems with push ups sit ups or run), but who did they call when they needed 500 lb. radar cabinets to be manhandled? Didn't see too many "model" Airmen around that day...
Can you tell I'm bitter about that experience?
I swore never again... -
Oh I didnt make it much further because I cant drive standard, not due to weight. Sorry, I forgot to specify that.
But if this is what you want, go for it. Your hard work will pay off, regardless of size.Chinatown Thanks this.
