What all do they check for in the physical? Besides bp is it more like dot? What past injuries would they send you home for? I had a small hernia over a year ago but the doc said I was OK to work and didn't need surgery.

Most of the physical is your body being tested for joints, range of motion, and your ability to lift heavy objects. They will test every joint you have to make sure that you can move well enough to keep from injuring yourself while doing the work.

I was horribly out of shape when I started, and I passed just fine. The requirements are not that bad... If they send you home to get checked out, it means that whatever is wrong would've likely given you a life-altering injury at some point.

I don't have official confirmation on this, but from what I've heard, there are three main reasons why people get sent home:

    1. Failing the drug test (Why even bother if you KNOW you're doing drugs??)

    2. High blood pressure (You're sent home to get cleared by your doctor. If he clears you, there's a bus ticket back to Little Rock waiting for you, unless its so high that DOT won't allow you to drive)

    3. Extremely high sugar readings in your urine test - as in diabetic levels. (Again, once checked out by a doctor, you're welcome back if you're cleared.)

A couple tips for you guys coming in:

    - Stay away from any sugary breakfast foods on the morning of the physical. They can give very high urine sugar readings sometimes.

    - Avoid smoking for at least 1 hour before the physical. Smoking raises your blood pressure and can cause you problems if it pushes it too high at the wrong moment.

    - Contrary to popular belief, DO NOT drink a large amount of water before the test. This can dilute your urine, which makes the sample invalid.

    - DO NOT eat anything with poppy seeds. Just one bagel is capable of causing you to test positive for opiates. It doesn't happen every time, but it can happen, and that's a headache you really don't need.

    - Chill out and relax. Many drivers in worse shape than you have passed all the tests and are still driving today. Getting yourself worked up will send your blood pressure through the roof at the worst possible time. In general, if you can get in and out of the truck, climb onto and off of the trailer safely, and lift at least 80 lbs to waist level, you'll be fine.

Also stay away from salty foods for a few days. Do not eat two egg mcmuffins before you take your physical LOL. And if you a really really worried about you blood pressure go on a fast. You can drop your bp by as much as 40/20 in just a few days! I use to always have a hard time with my bp but only in the doctors office with the doctor in the room. It would jump up tp 190/110 but literally as soon has he would leave it be back to normal 120/75.

Now I fast about week before I go to my DOT physical. I do not have to use any pills at all. But you should see uour own doctor

I believe a fast simply means not eating. Or eating very light.
