Wanting to get my Class A to work local trucking jobs. Can't afford the $4-$5k costs to attend and the schools that waive that fee want a year commitment of OTR. Plus I applied for grants and was denied due to a survey the worker put in. (It just goes from bad to Worst).

Is the OTR commitment really the only way? Just heard about Foodlink and they just closed the program yesterday. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Question. Did you get laid off from a previous employer? If so, there are programs out there that will give u training with minimal out of pocket cost. Unfortunately, you will sell your soul to OTR companies to get that 1 yr experience. Thats a bummer that Foodlink shutdown. Google, SETA Sacramento. One-Stop Career Center in Sacramento.

Nope. I'm currently self+employed and wanted a career change. Just went to the one stop career center for help. They were the ones who advised my grant denial. Booooo. Ok, sounds like I'll be selling my soul.

Wait...anyone heard from Western Pacific Truck School (off 8720 Fruitridge Rd, Sacramento, CA)? Are they accredited?

use the advanced search button on here and check western pacific school.... cant speak on it because i cant remember what was said about them....

But to answer your question, going to one of the CD mills for your CDL isnt necessary......................BUT....Might be your best option (all dependent on your personal situation)

If you're serious, i'd suggest going to DMV snatching up a commercial handbook, read read read it, come on here and take the practice test (at the top of the page), then when you feel good, go back to the DMV and take ALL your test to get your permit .... then do some research on here and decide for yourself what way is going to be the best for you to getting your CDL.

Me personally, since i wanna move to pulling tankers, and been out the game for a few years, i've all but decided (unless i find a local job) to go to PRIME for a refresher course/tanker experience. I wouldnt be consider going all the way to MO if i thought there was a better "school" here in Cali.

    good luck

Alot of companies require at least a 160 hour course if you are new and have no experience. I went to WPTS in Modesto and had no problem. If you are a Veteran they are GI Bill accredited. Look at the WPTS Modesto Thread on here and talk to some of us who went thru and are working now.

I just graduated from TDA in Sacramento. They have two programs. One is a company sponsored program for Central Refrigerated Services. The other allows you to work for other companies upon completion.

I went through the CRS program. It is a 3 week course and costs $3000. CRS will at for $1500 if you work for them for a year. The other $1500 is spread across 52 weeks ($28.85/ week).

The instructors are awesome. If you would like contact info, send me a message. Good luck with your search!

I just thought I'd toss my two cents in for what its worth. The school that has the billboard get your CDL in 1 day for 1500 is actually not so much a school but a place called Jiffy's CDL Truck Rental. I can't imagine why they would offer it in one day. That would be near of impossible unless you maybe just needed a refresher and already had your CDL. Anyways they offer a 5 day program for 1,995 where they take you out 1 on 1 the whole 5 days and they expect you to have a permit when you arrive. I know nothing about them beyond that but I have heard a few good words about them on here. I don't know if that helps but I thought I would toss it out there.
